The Quiet Threshold / Chapter 2 / 15

The Ledgers of Entitlement

"You selfish, manipulative little outsider," Evelyn hissed, though she instinctively dropped her volume to an ugly, venomous rasp. "You came into this family with nothing. Greg built this life, and everything he earns belongs to the family that raised him."

"Greg works eighty hours a week at the logistics firm," Hannah replied, her voice unwavering. "And for four years, every bonus, every tax return, and half our savings have gone into Penny’s bottomless well. A leased luxury SUV she couldn't afford. A four-bedroom townhouse she refused to downsize. Vacations charged to cards Greg ended up paying off."

"Penny is Greg’s sister! She is going through a difficult divorce!"

"Penny has been going through a 'difficult divorce' since before I met Greg," Hannah said. "She refuses to work, she refuses to budget, and you enable every single delusion she has. Last week, Clara needed an emergency ultrasound for a suspected pyloric stenosis. I had to put the co-pay on a personal credit card because our joint account was drained by a wire transfer to Penny’s salon account."

Evelyn’s face flushed a mottled crimson. "It was an emergency! Penny had a charity gala to attend to network for potential investors!"

"My daughter’s medical care is an emergency," Hannah said, taking a deliberate step back toward the nursery door, creating distance between the woman and the baby. "A hair appointment is not. I changed the bank access codes last night. Greg’s direct deposit now routes into an individual trust account for Clara’s medical and educational needs. Penny will not receive another dollar."

Evelyn let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Do you honestly think Greg will let you control his money? When he gets home from Chicago tonight, he will undo every single change you made, and you will apologize to Penny on your knees."

"We’ll see," Hannah said calmly. "Now, give me back the spare key to my front door."
