Chapter 7

The highway stretched out before them like a black ribbon cutting through the dense, evergreen forests of the northern coast. Rain began to fall steadily, drumming a hypnotic, relentless rhythm against the windshield of the SUV as David kept his eyes fixed firmly on the wet asphalt ahead. In the back seat, Lily had grown quiet after hours of travel, her head resting comfortably against the window as she hugged the doll with the purple bow close to her chest. Claire sat in the passenger seat, staring out at the blurred landscape, her fingers repeatedly tracing the outline of the brass key inside her coat pocket. The silence between David and Claire was thick, burdened by unspoken reproaches and the mounting anxiety of what they might find at the end of their journey. Every mile marker felt like a descent deeper into a forgotten world where the rules of their ordinary suburban life no longer applied. Allison’s cabin sat at the very edge of a rugged cliffside town known for its moody weather and isolated community, a place where people kept to themselves and secrets were buried deeper than the roots of the ancient pines. As the afternoon waned, the sky darkened prematurely into a bruised purple twilight, matching the color of the ribbon tied around the doll in the back seat. David broke the long silence, his voice tight with frustration as he pointed out that they had seen neither hide nor hair of Allison, nor any sign of the supposed danger she had warned them about. Claire urged him to keep driving, refusing to yield to his skepticism, driven by a deep maternal instinct that told her the key in her pocket was the only thing standing between her family and a catastrophic unknown.
