Chapter 3

The morning sun cut sharp, dusty rays across the kitchen table where Claire sat staring into a mug of black coffee that had long since grown cold. The colorful birthday balloons from the previous day now drooped sadly, their helium fading, mirroring the heavy exhaustion hanging in the air. David walked in wearing his work clothes, pouring himself a fresh cup and leaning against the counter with a calm, deliberate ease. He looked down at Claire, his expression softening into an affectionate yet slightly impatient smile. He reminded her that Allison had always been eccentric, a quirky artist who spent her days weaving strange tapestries and crafting unusual toys for her niece out of pure, if misguided, affection. Claire listened in silence, turning her wedding ring around her finger until the metal felt hot against her skin. She did not voice the dark suspicions gnawing at her insides, recognizing that without concrete proof, her fears sounded irrational even to her own ears. Lily skipped down the stairs a moment later, still wearing her floral dress, carrying the doll with the purple bow tucked under her arm as if it were a living pet. She asked for pancakes, her bright voice shattering the tense atmosphere and forcing Claire to paste on a cheerful maternal mask. Throughout breakfast, Claire watched the way Lily interacted with the doll, noticing how the child never set it down, treating it not merely as a toy, but as a silent confidant. When David left for the office, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of Claire's head and whispering encouraging words, the front door clicked shut with a definitive finality. Alone in the house with her daughter, Claire made up her mind. While Lily was occupied with her morning cartoons in the living room, Claire retrieved a small sewing kit from the upstairs hallway closet, knowing the time for polite denial had passed and the time for investigation had finally arrived.
