Chapter 1

The kitchen air still smelled faintly of burnt sugar and vanilla frosting from six-year-old Lily’s afternoon birthday party. Colorful balloons drifted slowly against the ceiling, their cheerful ribbons swaying in the draft from the open patio door. Claire stood frozen by the island counter, the small handmade doll weighing heavily in her hands. The plush fabric felt unnaturally dense, denser than any ordinary toy stuffed with polyester batting. Her thumbs traced the coarse stitching around the doll's neck, feeling a hard, rigid cylinder buried deep within the soft core. Across the room, David stepped closer, his grey sweater brushing against the edge of the marble countertop as he offered a placid, reassuring smile. He placed a steady hand on Claire’s shoulder, his touch warm and grounding, urging her to let go of the sudden wave of panic tightening her chest. Lily stood nearby, her small fingers nervously twisting the hem of her floral dress, her blue eyes wide with a mixture of anxiety and protective fierce loyalty. She took a half-step forward, reaching out a small hand as if to snatch her precious toy back from her mother’s inspection. Claire forced her breathing to slow, conscious of the impressionable child watching her every micro-expression. She knew her sister Allison, a brilliant but intensely eccentric textile artist living in an isolated farmhouse upstate, possessed an imagination that often crossed boundary lines. Yet, holding the doll, Claire felt an unmistakable prickle of dread crawl up the back of her neck. It was not merely a handmade gift; it felt like a deliberate physical artifact meant to convey a message Claire was not yet ready to decipher. She handed the doll back to Lily with a trembling, forced smile, murmuring soft apologies to soothe the little girl's frayed nerves, while deep inside her mind, a cold determination took root. She needed to know what Allison had hidden inside the stitching before the sun rose again over their quiet suburban neighborhood.
