Chapter 9: The Siege at Dawn

The rhythmic thud of heavy boots mounted the wooden front porch of the farmhouse, each step sounding like a hammer blow against the fragile silence of the night. Clara clutched the edge of the mattress, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Dr. Sterling crouched beside the antique bed, holding a heavy-duty encrypted satellite phone in one hand while keeping her eyes locked on the bedroom door. "I've triggered the emergency beacon for the state police tactical unit," Sterling whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the medical monitor. "They’re twenty minutes out from the county line. We have to hold this position." Outside, a harsh, metallic voice rang out through a megaphone, cutting sharply through the rustling pine branches. "Dr. Sterling! Clara Henderson! Open the front door immediately. Resistance is entirely futile. You cannot outrun corporate jurisdiction."
Marcus Cole’s voice was cold, flat, and devoid of any human warmth. It was the voice of a man who viewed human lives as mere biological commodities to be processed, ledgered, and discarded. Bruno let out a sharp, ferocious bark that shook the wooden doorframe, signaling his absolute defiance. There was a brief pause on the porch, followed by the heavy, splintering crack of a boot striking the wooden front door. The deadbolt held for a fraction of a second before the frame gave way with a loud crash, and heavy footsteps flooded into the front entryway of the farmhouse. "Clear the ground floor!" Cole barked inside the house. "Check the perimeter bedrooms. Bring the target alive; the biological extraction protocol requires an active host." Dr. Sterling gripped the fire poker with both hands, her knuckles stark white, positioning herself beside the bedroom entryway.

Clara slid her legs quietly off the bed, ignoring the sharp twinge of pain in her abdomen. She couldn't remain passive while others fought and died to protect her child. She grabbed a heavy glass water pitcher from the bedside table, her eyes locked on the doorknob as it began to slowly turn from the outside. Bruno crouched lower, his lips pulled back to reveal gleaming white fangs, the dark fur along his spine standing fully erect. The brass doorknob clicked, and the door swung open inward, revealing the tactical silhouette of a heavily armed operative clad in black composite armor, his rifle raised and sweeping the room with a laser sight. Before the operative could acquire targets, Bruno launched himself like a furry cannonball directly through the doorway, his massive jaws clamping onto the man’s tactical shoulder vest with bone-crunching force.
The operative shouted in shock and pain, stumbling backward into the hallway and crashing heavily against the wall, dropping his rifle onto the wooden floorboards. Clara didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, slamming the heavy glass water pitcher down onto the doorframe to wedge it securely, buying them a few crucial seconds. "Move!" Dr. Sterling hissed, grabbing Clara by the arm and dragging her toward the small casement window at the back of the bedroom. Sterling threw the iron latches, pushing the wooden shutters outward into the cool morning air. Below them, a steep drop led down into a thick cluster of briars and pine needles. The distant wail of police sirens suddenly began to echo from the county highway several miles away, signaling that the cavalry was finally closing the distance.
