Chapter 10: Flight Through the Briers

The cool morning air hit Clara’s face like a physical blow as she wriggled through the narrow casement window, dropping clumsily onto the soft, needle-strewn earth beneath the farmhouse wall. Dr. Sterling followed closely behind, landing with a soft grunt and immediately helping Clara to her feet. Bruno leaped through the window frame a second later, landing lightly on all four paws with practiced agility, shaking the pine needles from his thick coat before scanning the tree line with sharp, darting eyes. "This way," Sterling whispered urgently, grabbing Clara’s hand and pulling her toward a narrow deer trail that wound its way down a steep ravine toward the fog-shrouded riverbank below. Behind them, the muffled sound of shouting echoed from the farmhouse as Marcus Cole rallied his remaining operatives, realizing their primary targets had slipped out through the rear escape route.

A sharp crack of a suppressed rifle echoed through the quiet pine forest, and a bullet hissed past their heads, splintering the bark of a nearby birch tree with a sharp snap. "Run!" Sterling yelled, pushing Clara forward despite the agonizing pull in her lower abdomen. They scrambled down the steep embankment, sliding through loose dirt and damp leaves until they hit the flat, marshy ground bordering the slow-moving river. A thick morning fog rolled off the water, obscuring the opposite bank and providing a merciful wall of white concealment against potential sniper fire from the ridge above. Bruno trotted slightly ahead, his nose pressed close to the damp earth, guiding them along a hidden game trail that wound through a dense thicket of ferns and wild blackberry bushes that tore at Clara’s hospital gown and scratched her bare legs.

The sirens grew steadily louder, now howling through the winding mountain roads above the ravine, signaling that state police cruisers had converged on the farmhouse property. Clara clutched her abdomen, her breathing coming in ragged, painful gasps as another contraction rolled through her frame, forcing her to lean heavily against a thick pine trunk to keep from collapsing into the mud. "I can't... I can't breathe," Clara choked out, her vision blurring at the edges as cold sweat beaded across her forehead. Dr. Sterling knelt beside her, checking her pulse with frantic urgency. "Your blood pressure is bottoming out, Clara. The stress of the flight is triggering early transition." Sterling pulled a small silver emergency injector from her coat pocket, pressing the automatic device firmly against Clara’s thigh. A cool rush of adrenaline and relaxant surged through her veins, easing the acute cramp just enough to stave off full collapse.

Bruno suddenly froze ten paces ahead, his tail dropping flat as he let out a low, warning growl. Through the thick curtain of river fog, the dark silhouette of a small motorboat emerged from the reed beds, idling quietly against the muddy bank. A figure stood in the bow, wearing a heavy waterproof jacket and flashing a small infrared signal light twice in quick succession. "That's our extraction unit," Dr. Sterling breathed with visible relief, waving her hand in return. They scrambled the final twenty yards through the reeds, sliding down the muddy bank into the shallow water just as the boat’s gunwale bumped against the shore. Strong hands reached out to haul Clara aboard, while Bruno leaped effortlessly over the bow, shaking a spray of river water across the deck as he immediately took up a watchful stance beside Clara’s improvised pallet.
