Chapter 4: Shattered Glass

The force of Bruno’s second charge caught Dr. Vance entirely off guard. The heavy German Shepherd slammed squarely into the doctor’s chest, sending him crashing backward against the metal computer station with a loud, metallic clatter. The new syringe flew from Vance’s grip, spinning through the air before shattering against the base of the IV pole, sending a fine spray of clear liquid across the linoleum floor. Vance let out a sharp gasp of pain as the edge of the desk clipped his shoulder blade, his white lab coat tearing slightly against a protruding corner bracket. "Get this demonic animal off me!" Vance roared, his professional composure finally cracking as he struck out blindly with his forearm, trying to shove the dog away from his throat. Bruno clamped his jaws gently around the heavy fabric of the doctor’s sleeve, anchoring him firmly against the wall while keeping his teeth clear of actual flesh, displaying a terrifyingly disciplined restraint.

Clara clutched her abdomen, her breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps as the physical exertion of the room threatened to trigger another painful contraction. "Bruno, heel!" she commanded, her voice cutting sharply through the chaos. The German Shepherd immediately released his grip on the doctor’s sleeve, though he did not retreat. He dropped into a defensive crouch directly between the bed and the fallen doctor, his teeth bared in a silent snarl, his body trembling with high-octane adrenaline. Dr. Vance slid down the wall until he was sitting on the floor, his chest heaving as he clutched his bruised shoulder. The polished veneer of the caring physician was entirely gone, replaced by a dark, venomous glare that twisted his features into something unrecognizable. "You have no idea what you’ve ruined," Vance hissed, wiping a smear of blood from a small scratch on his chin with the back of his hand.

"What are you talking about?" Clara demanded, pulling herself up into a semi-seated position, ignoring the sharp pull of her uterine muscles. "What have you been giving me? Who sent you here?" Vance let out a harsh, bitter laugh that sounded entirely out of place in the sterile hospital environment. "Sent me? Clara, my dear, I own this clinic. Or at least, the experimental wing funded this entire operation. You were selected six months ago because your genetic markers matched the exact parameters required for the synthetic hormonal binding trials. Your child is the key to stabilizing the cellular degradation vector. Do you really think a prestigious downtown facility takes on charity maternity cases out of the goodness of their hearts?" The confession hung in the air, heavy and poisonous, stripping away the last remaining illusions Clara held about the sanctuary she had sought.

Before Clara could process the horrifying scale of the deception, the heavy door swung open once again. This time, it wasn't a nurse or a security guard. A tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark trench coat stepped into the room, his eyes sweeping over the shattered glass, the cowering doctor on the floor, and the vigilant German Shepherd guarding the bed. Detective Miller flashed a silver shield before slipping it back into his breast pocket. "State police," the detective announced, his voice deep and authoritative. "Dr. Thomas Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy, unauthorized human experimentation, and the unlawful detention of a protected patient." Vance stared up at the detective, his panic instantly vanishing, replaced by a chilling, calculating calm as he slowly pushed himself up from the floor, adjusting his torn lapel with unnerving composure.
