Chapter 9: Flight Through the Bank

The quiet atmosphere of the subterranean vault shattered into violent motion. Henderson recovered his footing instantly, lunging past the debris to grab Julian by the shoulder. A scuffle broke out in the narrow corridor, the sound of heavy grunts and scuffing shoes echoing off the stone walls.

Clara screamed, pressing herself flat against the cold metal lockers as the second operative moved to assist Henderson.

“Elena, go!” Julian yelled, straining against the combined weight of the two guards as he threw a hard punch that connected solidly with Henderson’s jaw, echoing a sharp crack through the corridor.

Elena didn't hesitate. Clutching her pregnant belly with one hand while keeping the other anchored to her coat pocket where the flash drive rested, she sprinted down the remaining length of the vault corridor toward the exit stairs. Her breathing came in short, ragged gasps, every footstep sending a sharp throb through her lower back, but adrenaline fueled her forward momentum.

She burst through the heavy steel fire door into the bank’s main lobby, startling customers and tellers alike. The gleaming marble floors and soaring ceilings suddenly felt exposed, a dangerous open arena. She scanned the crowd desperately, looking for a side exit or a service elevator.

Footsteps pounded behind her. The second operative had broken away from the scuffle in the vault and was closing the distance fast, weaving skillfully through the startled banking patrons.

“Stop her!” the guard shouted, drawing murmurs of alarm from nearby tellers.

Before the man could reach her, a heavy hand gripped Elena’s arm, pulling her sharply behind a massive marble pillar. She gasped, lashing out with her elbow, but a familiar voice cut through her panic.

“Quiet. It’s me,” Julian muttered, breathing heavily. A fresh bruise was forming along his jawline, matching the angry scratches on his cheek. He had managed to shake off Henderson long enough to catch up, though his suit jacket was torn at the shoulder.

“Where is Clara?” Elena whispered frantically, pressing her back against the cool marble.

“She stayed behind to lock the vault door from the inside using the manual override,” Julian said quickly, his eyes darting toward the main entrance where security guards were beginning to converge. “She bought us thirty seconds. Come on.”

They didn't head for the front doors. Julian led Elena toward the executive restrooms at the back of the lobby, slipping through a heavy service door marked Authorized Personnel Only. Behind them, shouts rang out as Henderson and backup security flooded into the main hall, searching frantically for the fleeing pair.
