Chapter 8: The Closing Net

Before anyone could speak further, the heavy metal door at the end of the vault corridor banged open. Heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed off the stone walls, shattering the quiet sanctuary of the subterranean chamber.
Julian’s head snapped up. His instincts, honed by years in high-stakes corporate warfare, kicked in instantly. He shoved the manila folders back into the metal box and slammed the lid down with a metallic clatter.
“We have company,” Julian said, his voice hard and urgent.
Two men in identical charcoal suits appeared around the corner. They weren't bank employees; their posture, their unsmiling expressions, and the sharp bulges beneath their left armpits signaled clearly that they were private security operatives answering directly to the corporate board—specifically, to Robert Vance.
“Mr. Vance,” the lead operative said smoothly, his eyes cold as they flicked from Julian to Clara, and finally to Elena. “Chairman Vance sends his regards. He thought it would be best if those files were returned to the corporate archives where they belong.”
Clara stepped back, her face white with terror. “You work for my uncle. How did you know we’d be here?”
“The board monitors all safety deposit activity associated with former consultants, Ms. Vance,” the operative replied, taking another step forward, blocking the only exit from the vault alcove. “Now, please step away from the box. We don't want to make a scene in a public financial institution.”
Julian stepped in front of Elena, shielding her and the metal box with his tall frame. The scratches on his cheek seemed to throb as his jaw clenched tightly. “You don't have jurisdiction here, Henderson. This is a private box belonging to a private citizen.”
“Mr. Vance, the chairman’s patience has run out,” Henderson said, his hand resting casually near his jacket interior. “And so has yours. Step aside.”
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs, but a strange, icy calm washed over her. She looked down at the metal box in her hands. She knew that if they surrendered the files now, Thomas’s death would be swept under the rug forever, and her unborn child would grow up in a world dictated by powerful men who operated above the law.
With a sudden, decisive movement, Elena reached into the box, grabbed the magnetic flash drive, and slipped it deep into the interior pocket of her coat. She left the paper folders resting on the table, knowing the digital file was the ultimate insurance policy.

Julian caught her movement out of the corner of his eye. Without missing a beat, he lunged forward, slamming the fold-down wooden table upward, shattering it against the wall and knocking the leading operative off balance.
“Run!” Julian shouted over the sudden chaos.
