Chapter 13: Turning the Tide

The operatives raised their weapons, taking a synchronized step forward into the loft. Marcus lunged immediately, swinging the heavy wrench in a wide arc that caught the first operative across the shoulder, sending him crashing backward into a stack of empty wooden crates.
The second operative leveled his weapon directly at Marcus, but before he could pull the trigger, Julian moved with explosive speed. He tackled the man hard, driving him into the rough concrete floor of the loft. A brief, violent struggle ensued, the sound of panting breaths and rolling bodies echoing off the metal walls.
Robert Vance stepped back toward the shattered doorway, his face twisting in rage as he realized his control was slipping away permanently. He reached inside his overcoat, pulling out a small, snub-nosed revolver.
“If I’m going down, I’m taking the loose ends with me,” Robert snarled, raising the barrel directly toward Elena, who stood frozen near the wood stove, shielding her unborn child with both hands.
Clara screamed, throwing herself blindly between her uncle and Elena. The movement caught Robert off guard just enough to deflect his aim.
A sharp report echoed through the loft like thunder.
The bullet shattered a nearby window, sending shards of glass raining down onto the floor. Before Robert could readjust his grip, heavy footsteps echoed wildly up the stairwell behind him.
The unmistakable sound of police sirens wailed outside, growing deafeningly loud as multiple cruisers converged on the building. Red and blue emergency lights flashed frantically through the grimy factory windows, painting the loft in pulsating strokes of color.
Through the shattered doorway poured a heavily armed federal tactical unit, their badges gleaming under the harsh light.

“Federal agents! Drop your weapon! Down on the ground now!” the lead federal officer commanded, training a service rifle directly on Robert Vance.
Robert stared at the officers, then looked down at the revolver in his trembling hand. Slowly, the fight drained out of him. He let the weapon drop to the wooden floor with a heavy clatter, raising his hands in bitter defeat as federal agents swarmed the room, pushing him down against the floor and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.
