Chapter 5: The Unbroken Promise

Back in the city, Dustin called frantically. His messages filled Maya’s voicemail, ranging from anger to desperation.
""Maya, bring her back! My mother was just trying to instill values! You're making a huge mistake,"" one message read.
Maya sat on the porch, listening to the recording with a calm heart. She realized then that Dustin was not a villain, but he was a man trapped in his own childhood trauma, unwilling to break the cycle. She deleted the voicemails one by one.

She wrote a single email to Dustin’s attorney specifying that any future communication regarding divorce and custody would go through legal channels. She demanded full custody, offering liberal supervised visitation only if Dustin agreed to family counseling without Eleanor’s involvement.
That evening, Maya joined Lily on the rug. They pulled out watercolors and paper. Maya painted a bright, blooming tree, while Lily painted a small yellow bird soaring high above the storm clouds.
