Chapter 1: The Echo of the Razor

The sharp hum of the electric razor echoed in Maya’s ears long after Mrs. Eleanor Vance had turned it off. On the carpet lay soft tufts of golden hair, silent witnesses to a cruelty disguised as discipline. Maya held her daughter, Lily, whose bare scalp bore fresh red scratches.

Eleanor stood near the doorway, her navy blue suit unwrinkled, her pearls gleaming in the dull morning light. ""Dustin agreed,"" Eleanor said, her voice smooth and devoid of heat. ""She needed to learn humility.""

Maya looked up, tears blurring her vision, but beneath the sorrow, something ignited—a fierce, protective flame. ""She’s seven years old, Eleanor,"" Maya whispered, her voice trembling with restrained rage. ""She is a child.""

Eleanor didn't answer. She simply placed the razor on the dresser and walked out, her heels clicking methodically on the hardwood floor. In Maya's arms, Lily clutched her purple plush rabbit, burying her face into her mother's chest.

""Daddy said Grandma knows best,"" Lily snuffled, her small voice muffled.

Maya kissed the crown of Lily’s head, feeling the warmth of her skin. ""Grandma is wrong, baby,"" Maya whispered softly into the quiet room. ""And today, we leave.""
