Chapter 2: The Silent Departure

Maya didn't wait for Dustin to return from his corporate trip. She knew what he would say; he had spent his entire life cowering under his mother’s stern authority. Dustin’s silence was his consent, and Maya refused to let Lily pay the price for his cowardice.

While Lily slept off her exhaustion, Maya packed two suitcases. She took only essentials: clothes, Lily’s favorite books, medical records, and the plush rabbit. She left her wedding ring on the granite kitchen island beside a simple note: We deserve peace.

As Maya loaded the trunk of her compact sedan, the overcast sky began to drizzle. She looked back at the sprawling suburban house—a gilded cage where control was mistaken for care.

Lily walked out, wearing a bright yellow hoodie with the hood pulled low over her head to cover her bare scalp. She held Maya’s hand tightly.

""Where are we going, Mommy?"" Lily asked, looking up with big, uncertain eyes.

""To a place where you can just be you,"" Maya said, offering a small, reassuring smile as she buckled Lily into the backseat.
