Chapter 9

The legal battle intensified as the date for the preliminary injunction hearing drew closer. Richard Vance arrived at the estate early Tuesday morning carrying a secure laptop and a thick stack of certified bank transcripts that painted a devastating picture of corporate fraud and embezzlement. Arthur and Elena met him in the formal study, where heavy velvet drapes blocked out the overcast sky. “We’ve uncovered a series of shell companies Julian established in the Cayman Islands using your signature, forged on several corporate loan documents,” Richard explained, turning the laptop screen toward Elena. “If convicted of financial fraud alongside domestic assault, he is looking at a minimum of five to ten years in federal custody, with zero possibility of early parole.” Elena stared at the glowing graphics and fraudulent signatures, feeling a strange mixture of vindication and profound sadness for the wasted years she had spent believing she was the broken one in the marriage. “He always told me I was financially illiterate, that without his business acumen I would be living on the street within a week,” she murmured, tracing the edge of the mahogany desk. “That was part of his psychological control, Elena,” Arthur said gently, placing his hand over hers. “He needed you to feel small so he could stand tall on your shoulders.” The intercom buzzed, and Mrs. Gable’s voice broke the heavy concentration in the room. “Mr. Vance, there’s a visitor at the gate. It’s Julian’s mother, Evelyn. She’s demanding to speak with Elena privately.” Arthur immediately stood up, his jaw tightening with immediate rejection. “Tell her to leave the property immediately or I’ll have the local police escort her off for trespassing.” But Elena held up a hand, stopping her father in his tracks. “Let her in, Dad. I want to see what she has to say when her son’s golden fortress is finally crumbling around her.” Arthur hesitated for a moment, then nodded to Mrs. Gable through the intercom. Ten minutes later, Evelyn entered the study, looking uncharacteristically frail and stripped of her usual haughty social superiority.
