Chapter 1

The marble floor of the luxury kitchen felt cold against Julian’s palm as he staggered backward, tasting copper and bitter realization. The sharp punch from Arthur Vance, his powerful father-in-law, had knocked the arrogance right out of his blue button-down shirt. Above them, the multicolored candles on the birthday cake flickered unsteadily, casting long, dancing shadows across the expensive countertops and the stunned faces of the silent party guests. Elena stood frozen a few feet away, her right eye still swollen and deeply bruised beneath the glitter of her sequin dress. She looked smaller than she actually was, trembling with a mixture of delayed shock and profound disbelief that someone had finally stepped up to defend her. Arthur loomed over Julian, his broad shoulders heaving with controlled fury, his dark suit jacket straining slightly as he pointed a trembling, authoritative finger down at the man who had dared lay hands on his daughter. The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the soft, rhythmic hum of the high-end refrigerator and the shallow, ragged breathing of the terrified guests who had witnessed the sudden explosion of domestic violence in broad daylight. Arthur’s chest rose and fell in heavy, rhythmic surges, his grey hair slightly disheveled from his sudden, aggressive entry through the patio doors. He did not care about the expensive party, the social standing, or the corporate alliances that usually dictated his every public move. Right now, he was simply a father whose only child had been abused under the guise of marriage. Julian pushed himself up slightly, wiping a smear of blood from the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand, trying desperately to salvage a shred of his ruined dignity. His gaze flicked toward the guests, expecting someone to murmur disapproval at Arthur’s violent outburst, but every pair of eyes was averted, fixed on the polished stone floor. The illusion of perfection that Julian had so carefully constructed around their affluent suburban life was shattered in a single, violent second, leaving behind only the stark, ugly truth of what happened behind closed doors when the smiling family photos were finally put away for the night.
