Chapter 8: Walking Away

The restaurant around them had gone entirely still. Every patron was pretending not to watch, yet every ear was straining to catch the dialogue. The maitre d' stood frozen near the kitchen doors, holding a tray of sparkling water he no longer dared to deliver.

Julian looked down at Clara, his expression softening instantly into one of deep, abiding affection. "Are you ready to leave now, sweetheart?" he asked softly, ignoring Victor and Beatrice entirely.

Clara nodded, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through the exhaustion on her face. She reached out and took Julian’s hand, letting him help her up from the velvet chair. She didn't look at Beatrice as she stood; she didn't need to. The woman in the black evening dress looked smaller now, diminished by her own arrogance and the sudden collapse of her lifelong ambitions.

As Julian guided Clara toward the exit, Victor cleared his throat, a pathetic echo of his former authority. "Julian... wait. Surely we can renegotiate the terms. We can draft a new agreement that accommodates... your personal arrangements."

Julian didn't even turn around as he walked, his arm firmly around Clara’s waist to support her heavy steps. "The only thing I’m negotiating tonight is the temperature of the bathwater when we get home," Julian called back over his shoulder.

They pushed through the heavy glass doors into the cool, damp night air of Manhattan. The rain had slowed to a gentle drizzle, leaving the asphalt slick and reflecting the neon glow of storefront signs. Julian’s private car—a sleek black sedan—was idling curbside, its hazard lights blinking softly in the gloom. The driver scrambled out immediately, rushing to open the rear door for them.

Clara slid into the plush leather interior with a sigh of relief, pulling her worn gray sweater tighter around her shivering frame. Julian climbed in beside her, closing the door and shutting out the noise and artificial brilliance of La Mer.

The car pulled away from the curb smoothly, merging into the steady flow of evening traffic. Clara rested her head against Julian’s shoulder, watching the blurred city lights dance across the windowpane. "You really gave it all up over a table?" she murmured softly, closing her eyes as the steady hum of the engine vibrated through the floorboards.

Julian pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her dark ponytail. "I didn't give anything up, Clara. I just finally decided to invest in the only thing that was ever truly real."
