Chapter 14: Sanctuary

The Vermont homestead sat on five rolling acres of pristine land, surrounded by dense groves of maple and pine trees that blazed with the brilliant reds and golds of autumn. A small, glass-clear lake glittered just beyond the backyard, its surface mirroring the vast, cloudless blue of the northern sky. The wrap-around wooden porch creaked slightly in the gentle breeze, welcoming them home with the timeless charm of rural New England.
Julian pulled the black sedan up the gravel driveway, parking right beside the front steps. He turned off the engine, stepping out into the crisp, pine-scented air that filled his lungs with an invigorating freshness he hadn't felt in a decade. He walked around to Clara’s side, opening the door and offering his hand with the same gentle care he had shown her every day since that fateful night in Manhattan.
Clara stepped out of the car, pausing to take a deep, appreciative breath of the clean country air. She placed both hands on her swollen belly, feeling a strong, reassuring kick from the baby, as if welcoming them to their new life. The memory of the upscale restaurant, the glaring chandeliers, the cold arrogance of Beatrice, and the crude cardboard sign bearing the word "RESERVADO" felt like a distant, irrelevant lifetime ago.
"It’s perfect," Clara murmured, tears of pure joy glistening in her eyes as she looked up at the sprawling farmhouse.

"It’s ours," Julian corrected gently, pulling her into a warm, protective embrace.
They walked up the wooden steps together, their footsteps synchronized and steady, leaving the noise, the greed, and the superficial cruelty of the corporate world far behind them. Inside, the house was warm and filled with the scent of fresh cedar and baking bread left by the local realtor. Every room was a blank canvas waiting to be filled with laughter, quiet mornings, and the unhurried passage of time.
