Chapter 15: The Unbroken Circle

Two weeks after their arrival in Vermont, as the first gentle flurries of winter began to dust the mountain peaks in white, Clara went into labor. The transition was swift and natural, unfolding in the quiet sanctuary of their new bedroom, guided by a local midwife who brought a calm, grounded presence to the farmhouse. Julian never left Clara’s side, holding her hand through every contraction, whispering words of love and encouragement with a steady, unbreakable devotion.

When their healthy baby boy finally entered the world, his strong, clear cry filled the farmhouse with vibrant life. Julian wrapped the newborn in a soft, flannel blanket and gently placed him in Clara’s arms, tears streaming freely down both of their faces. The exhaustion, the past humiliations, and the corporate battles vanished into absolute insignificance, eclipsed entirely by the fragile, perfect life resting against Clara’s chest.

Later that evening, while the baby slept peacefully in his handmade crib in the newly finished nursery, Julian sat beside Clara on the edge of their wide, comfortable bed. The snow fell softly against the windowpanes outside, blanketing the Vermont landscape in a pure, unbroken white.

Clara leaned her head against Julian’s shoulder, feeling the deep, steady rhythm of his breathing. "Do you ever think about them?" she asked softly, her voice carrying no bitterness, only a quiet curiosity. "About Beatrice, or Victor, or the restaurant?"

Julian shook his head, wrapping his arm securely around her shoulders and pulling her closer. "Not at all, sweetheart," he said, looking down at her with a tender, unshakeable smile. "We reserved our table a long time ago. And nobody will ever take it away from us again."
