Chapter 6

The shattering of safety glass echoed like a whip-crack down the rain-slicked alleyway. Marcus let out a sharp cry from inside the sedan as another round punched cleanly through the driver’s side door, burying itself into the dashboard with a dull thud. Agent Vance shoved Elena down behind the heavy steel frame of the cruiser, drawing his firearm with fluid, practiced precision.

“Stay down!” Vance barked, scanning the surrounding high-rise rooftops where the muzzle flash had briefly illuminated the heavy gloom.

Elena pressed her back against the cold metal tire of the cruiser, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The black quilted handbag was clutched tightly to her chest like a shield, the blinking red LED of the hidden GPS tracker still pulsing rhythmically against her ribs.

“Who’s shooting?” Elena screamed over the roar of the wind and the steady drumbeat of the rain. “Was that Julian? Did he have a contingency team waiting?”

“No,” Vance muttered, his eyes darting across the empty street as he maintained a low tactical posture. “Julian is secured in the back of our transport unit half a mile away. That sniper fire came from professional-grade ordnance. Standard-issue suppressed bolt-action rifle, likely firing from the ventilation deck of the parking structure across the block.”

Inside the sedan, Marcus kicked open the passenger door, rolling out onto the wet asphalt and crawling on his hands and knees toward the shelter of the cruiser. Blood dripped steadily from a shallow graze across his forearm where a glass splinter had caught him during the first volley.

“They’re not trying to kill us, Vance!” Marcus yelled, pressing his back against the bumper beside Elena. “They’re trying to destroy the hardware key in her bag!”

Elena looked down at the metal flash drive clenched in her gloved hand. The blinking red light on the GPS tracker suddenly accelerated, its pulse shifting from a slow steady beat to a frantic, erratic strobe.

“What are you talking about?” Elena demanded, her eyes wide with adrenaline. “Why would anyone want to destroy the key if it holds the evidence?”

“Because it doesn’t just hold evidence of financial fraud,” Marcus gasped, wiping rain and sweat from his forehead with his uninjured arm. “That drive contains the decryption codes for the zero-day exploit Julian installed in the city’s entire municipal power grid three weeks ago.”

Agent Vance turned his head sharply toward Marcus, his expression hardening into absolute disbelief. “An exploit in the municipal grid? Are you out of your mind? Julian is a corporate financier, not a cyber-terrorist.”

“Money was never the end game, Agent,” Marcus said, wincing as he gripped his bleeding arm. “The eleven million from the Meridian Trust was just the collateral to fund the infrastructure acquisition. Julian wanted total control over the city’s automated transit and power systems before the corporate merger went live tomorrow morning.”

Elena felt the ground drop out from beneath her once again. Every memory of the past three years—every late night in the glass-walled penthouse office, every quiet conversation over wine at L’Orangerie, every tender reassurance when she doubted her own capabilities—flashed through her mind, twisted into a horrifying mosaic of calculated manipulation.

“He made me sign the deployment authorizations,” Elena whispered, the horror dawning on her with crushing clarity. “When we updated the system architecture last month... he told me it was just a routine compliance patch.”

“And you signed it without reading the technical annexes,” Vance said grimly, keeping his weapon raised toward the parking structure. “Which means legally, you are listed as the primary deployment architect for a city-wide infrastructure shutdown.”

Before Vance could call for tactical reinforcement on his radio, a blinding flash of white light erupted from the transformer box mounted on the brick wall ten feet above their heads, followed by a deafening explosion that plunged the entire street into pitch-black darkness.
