Chapter 5

The black federal sedan pulled away from the curb with a sharp splash of water, its taillights bleeding red streaks into the rainy night. Elena stood motionless on the pavement, the cold water soaking through the fabric of her designer shoes, completely numb to the elements. Marcus had already gotten into the passenger seat of his own vehicle, leaving her alone with the lingering presence of the doppelgänger, who had vanished back into the shadows of the alleyway as quickly as she had appeared.
Elena raised her shaking hand, pulling the object out from the dark lining of her black quilted handbag. It was indeed a second silver flash drive, identical down to the tiny serial number stamped on its metal casing to the one Julian had left on the restaurant table before his arrest.
“Agent Vance,” Elena called out, her voice sharp enough to halt the federal agent who was walking back toward his unmarked cruiser.
Agent Vance turned around, stepping back into the light with a patient, calculated expression. He adjusted his collar against the driving rain and walked over to where Elena stood paralyzed.
“Ms. Vance,” the agent acknowledged formally. “I suggest you get inside a vehicle before you catch pneumonia. We have a lot of ground to cover tonight, and your name is on every preliminary indictment document we pulled from Julian’s primary server.”
“My name is on the indictments?” Elena repeated, her voice rising in defensive disbelief. “I was kept in the dark for three years! Julian managed every single portfolio allocation while I focused entirely on corporate branding and client relations.”
Agent Vance pulled a slim leather folder from his trench coat pocket, flipping it open to reveal a series of certified digital signatures. He angled the folder beneath the amber glow of the streetlamp so Elena could read the fine print.
“According to the corporate charter filed in Delaware three years and two days ago,” Vance said evenly, “you hold controlling shares in the parent shell company that absorbed the Meridian Trust funds. Legally speaking, Julian couldn’t move a single dollar without your biometric authorization signature.”
Elena stared at the glowing blue ink of the digital signature block. It bore her full legal name, authenticated by a retinal scan timestamped at 3:14 AM on a Tuesday she vaguely remembered spending at their corporate retreat in Aspen—a retreat where Julian had insisted she complete a routine security clearance update on his office tablet.
“He tricked me,” Elena whispered, her hands trembling so violently she dropped the flash drive onto the wet pavement.
Agent Vance knelt down with practiced ease, scooped up the metal drive, and held it out to her on the palm of his glove. He didn’t hand it back immediately; instead, he examined the casing closely under the streetlamp’s beam.
“This isn’t just a standard flash drive, Ms. Vance,” Vance observed, his tone shifting from bureaucratic formality to guarded suspicion. “This is a military-grade hardware key with a localized self-destruct trigger. If it’s plugged into an unauthorized terminal, it wipes the core registry clean in three seconds.”
Before Elena could reach out to take it back, a sharp, piercing sound cut through the hum of the city traffic. It was coming from inside Elena’s handbag—a high-pitched electronic chirp that neither her phone nor any standard notification app produced.
“What is that?” Vance demanded, his hand dropping instinctively toward the service weapon holstered beneath his trench coat.
Elena unzipped her handbag with frantic fingers, pushing aside her wallet, compact mirror, and lipstick case until her hand brushed against a small, flat black device taped to the inner lining of the bag. It was a GPS tracker, and its tiny red LED light was blinking rapidly in a frantic sequence that indicated it was actively transmitting their exact coordinates to an external receiver.
“It’s a tracker,” Elena said, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. “Someone inside the federal task force is tracking this exact location in real-time.”

Agent Vance’s eyes narrowed instantly. He grabbed Elena’s arm, pulling her hard toward his cruiser just as a high-velocity gunshot shattered the rear window of Marcus’s sedan parked twenty feet away.
