Chapter 11

The total blackout was absolute, blotting out the stars and the skyline until only the faint, pulsing red glow emanating from inside Elena’s black quilted handbag cut through the suffocating darkness. The distant rumble of the city’s collapsing power grid vibrated through the asphalt, shaking the foundations of the surrounding buildings like a minor earthquake.
Elena dropped to her knees in the wet dirt, her hands frantically unzipping her handbag as the red light grew brighter and faster. Director Hayes lunged forward to grab her arm, but Agent Vance intercepted him with a brutal cross-body block that sent the silver-haired director sprawling onto the hood of the federal cruiser.
“Stay back!” Vance roared, keeping his service weapon leveled at Hayes while pinning Marcus beneath his other arm.
Elena ignored the chaos around her. She plunged her hands deep into the velvet lining of her quilted handbag, pushing past her compact mirror and wallet until her fingers closed around a flat, warm metal device that hadn't been there a moment before. “Don’t touch it, Elena!” Marcus screamed from the pavement beneath Vance’s knee, blood smearing across his cheek as he strained against the restraint. “If you hit yes, every offshore account linked to the Meridian Trust will automatically dump eleven million dollars into an untraceable ledger controlled by the underground syndicate!”
Elena looked down at the blinking prompt. Her thumb hovered over the small physical button marked Y. The rain misted gently against her face, cooling the sweat on her forehead as her mind raced back to the luxury restaurant at L’Orangerie—back to the moment Julian had calmly asked her across the white linen table, “Shall we split it?”
He hadn't been asking about the dinner bill. He had been asking if she was ready to divide the guilt of their shared creation.
From the ledge above, the doppelgänger leaned over the concrete railing, her dark hair falling forward as she watched the scene unfold with an intense, unreadable expression.
