Chapter 5

The elevator ride down to the hotel’s subterranean security hub was a masterclass in tense silence. The brass-paneled interior reflected three distinct expressions: Elena’s exhausted determination, Clara’s cautious vigilance, and Julian’s calculating focus. The digital floor indicator ticked downward in glowing red numbers: B2, B3, B4.
When the doors slid open, they were met with the low hum of enterprise-grade server racks and the cool, sterile scent of ozone and chilled air. The security office was surprisingly empty, save for a solitary night-shift technician whose eyes were glued to a bank of twenty monitors.
"Hey, you're not authorized to be down here," the technician said, half-heartedly turning in his ergonomic chair as Julian led the way into the room.
Julian didn't break stride. He reached into his tuxedo jacket, withdrew a slim leather folio, and flashed a silver card that caught the blue glow of the monitors. "Special Oversight Committee, corporate compliance division. We have an active asset discrepancy involving camera feed four-zero-two."
The technician swallowed hard, immediately recognizing the corporate insignia. "Yes, sir. Right away. What do you need?"
"Access to the immutable audit logs for the third-floor corridor between ten-fifteen and ten-thirty PM," Clara interjected, stepping up beside the technician's console. Her voice carried an authoritative calm that made the young man automatically comply. She pointed a finger at the interface. "Don't touch the local cache. Pull the raw packet data directly from the cloud relay."
As the technician’s fingers flew across the keyboard, a complex cascade of hexadecimal code scrolled across the main monitor. Julian leaned over the console, his broad shoulders blocking the ambient light.
"There," Julian pointed. "Look at the packet header."
Elena leaned in close, the scent of her expensive perfume mixing with the cold air of the server room. On the screen, a series of data streams showed that the camera recording the hallway had indeed been accessed remotely from an external IP address belonging to the executive suites on the penthouse floor—specifically, Marcus’s private terminal. Furthermore, a secondary script had been automatically generated to email a compressed video file to a tabloid news editor within seconds of the slap.
"He didn't just want to embarrass me," Elena said, her voice shaking with suppressed rage. "He wanted me disgraced in the press so I’d sign over my voting shares in the family trust under duress."

"And he used you as the prop to make the footage look authentic," Julian added, glancing over at Clara. "A wealthy heiress assaulting a working-class woman over a stolen necklace. It’s tailor-made for public outrage. It destroys your credibility completely."
Clara stared at the screen, the cold reality of how close she had come to being collateral damage settling deep into her bones. "What do we do now? We have the proof, but Marcus has the power of the board behind him."
