Chapter 2

The little red recording light pulsed like a tiny, mechanical heartbeat against the white plaster ceiling. Elena felt the blood drain from her face, leaving her skin chilled beneath the heavy heat of the Grandview Hotel’s corridor. Her hand, still warm from the violent impact against Clara’s cheek, dropped slowly to her side. The emerald green velvet of her dress seemed to tighten around her ribs, constricting her breath.

Julian didn't move. His hands remained casually resting inside the pockets of his tailored trousers, though his posture radiated a tense, predatory alertness. He kept his eyes fixed on the camera lens, knowing full well what those digital archives contained.

"That camera has a wide-angle lens, Elena," Julian said softly, his voice cutting through the heavy quiet like a scalpel. "It records in high definition, capturing audio as well. Every word you spoke just now is currently being saved to a secure cloud server in the basement."

Clara lowered her hand from her reddened cheek. The stinging pain was nothing compared to the hollow ache in her chest. She looked between Julian and Elena, her mind racing. She had only come to the gala to return the misplaced handbag to the hotel concierge, having found it abandoned near the coat check. She had never touched the necklace. She hadn't even known it was inside until Elena rushed out of the VIP lounge, grabbed her by the arm, and launched into a tirade of classist fury.

"Why would you do this?" Clara asked, her voice steadying despite the lingering tears. She looked directly at Elena. "You didn't even check. You just saw me standing near your table, and because of what I wear, because of who my family is, you decided I was a criminal."

Elena swallowed hard, fighting to regain her composure. She lifted her chin, wrapping her expensive arrogance around herself like a fragile shield. "People like her don't belong in rooms like this," Elena muttered, though her voice lacked its earlier conviction. She glanced down at the open beige handbag, suddenly realizing the horrific trap she had constructed for herself.

Julian sighed, stepping closer to the bag on the floor. With the toe of his polished dress shoe, he nudged it slightly. "The question isn't whether she belongs here, Elena. The real question is why your family's heirloom was stashed in a public hallway, and who placed it there just minutes before you staged this public spectacle."
