Chapter 10

The drive to the state capital was quiet, the highway stretching out before them like a ribbon of black glass under a starlit sky. Leo drove his truck with both hands resting lightly on the wheel, while Elena sat in the passenger seat organizing the digital files on the secure USB drive using her laptop. The interior glow of the screen cast a pale blue light across her face, highlighting the deep focus in her eyes.

In the back seat, safely tucked away in a padded briefcase, sat the soil sample jars and Howard’s signed affidavit detailing the unauthorized burial trench found beneath his solar installation. Detective Vance had stayed behind to coordinate with state investigators, ensuring that the local police precinct couldn't bury the report before it reached higher authorities.

"You realize what happens once we hand this over to the attorney general," Elena said without looking up from her screen. "Pendelton and his executive board are going to retaliate with everything they have. They have billions of dollars in assets and an army of corporate attorneys who specialize in destroying whistleblowers."

Leo kept his eyes fixed on the empty highway ahead. "Let them try. For five years, I lived with the guilt of believing my brother was a criminal. I let them write the narrative because I was too tired and too scared to look closer. I'm not running anymore, Elena."

Elena turned her head, looking at him in the dim light of the dashboard. A subtle, genuine smile touched the corners of her mouth—the first real smile she had managed since the whole ordeal began. "You handled that ladder removal with terrifying precision, Leo. I honestly thought I was going to be stuck on that roof forever."

"I needed you to stay put," Leo replied with a faint, dry smirk. "Otherwise, I would have had to chase you down the street, and my cardio isn't what it used to be."

The tension that had defined their initial encounter dissolved completely, replaced by an easy, hard-won camaraderie forged in the crucible of shared danger. They were two broken individuals who had collided in the most chaotic way possible, yet their combined momentum was about to dismantle one of the most corrupt corporate cover-ups in the state's history.

As the city skyline of the state capital began to rise on the horizon, glowing with a dull amber light against the dark predawn sky, Elena closed her laptop and locked the secure files. The real battle was about to begin, but for the first time in years, the path forward was entirely clear.
