Chapter 8 - The Silver Cuffs

The metallic click of the stainless steel handcuffs sounded deafening in the silent ballroom. As the federal agents secured the cuffs around Victoria’s delicate wrists, her dark blue satin gown bunched awkwardly against her waist, ruining the illusion of untouchable aristocracy she had spent decades cultivating. She didn't scream, nor did she cry; instead, her face hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred as she was guided past the rows of horrified guests.

As they passed Clara, Victoria leaned in close, her voice a venomous hiss.

"You think you've won, Clara? You're stepping out of this ballroom into a cold, empty world with a criminal record and zero prospects. I'll make sure you rot in the cell right next to mine."

Clara remained silent, her posture rigid. She watched the agents lead Victoria through the double doors, the heavy oak panels swinging shut behind them with a final, echoing thud. The ballroom felt suddenly vast and hollow, like a tomb built for the ghosts of high society.

Julian stood up slowly from his chair, his tuxedo jacket wrinkled and stained with spilled wine. He looked around the room, meeting the averted, judgmental gazes of former friends and business associates who now treated him like a contagion. Without a word, he turned and began walking toward the service exit at the back of the room, eager to disappear into the anonymous shadows of the New York night.

"Julian," Harrison Vance called out, his voice stopping the disgraced heir just before he reached the heavy velvet curtains.

Julian paused, his back turned to the lawyer. He didn't look back.

"Your grandfather left one final instruction," Harrison said, his tone softening just a fraction. "It’s not in the legal files. It’s a message, delivered verbally to me, to be passed on to you the moment everything fell apart."

Julian slowly turned his head over his shoulder, his eyes dull and exhausted. "What did he say?"

"He said: 'Now that you’ve lost everything that wasn't yours... go find out who you actually are.'"

May you like

Julian swallowed hard, a single tear finally breaking free and tracking down his cheek before he stepped through the velvet curtains and vanished into the corridor.
