Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Silk

The metallic rip of tearing silk echoed loudly in the stunned silence of the ballroom. As the gold slip dress gave way, the floral-patterned sofa pillow tumbled out from its makeshift holster, bouncing awkwardly off the edge of the mahogany table before landing with a humiliating thud on the pristine white carpet. A collective gasp rose from the gallery of elites. Photographers stationed near the perimeter doors instinctively raised their cameras, the rapid-fire clicking of shutters sounding like a swarm of mechanical locusts feasting on their humiliation.

Julian recoiled from the table as if the pillow were a venomous snake. His face turned an ash-gray as the magnitude of the fraud crashed down upon him. He was not just an accomplice to a harmless prank; he was a participant in a multi-million-dollar felony conspiracy designed to defraud a dying patriarch.

"You used me," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, ugly vulnerability that made several onlookers avert their eyes. "All of it... the romance, the pregnancy, the timing... it was all a scam."

Victoria rushed forward, her composure completely shattered. She grabbed Julian by the lapel of his tuxedo, her fingernails digging through the fabric.

"Shut up, Julian!" Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with manic desperation. "If the old man dies tonight without signing that amendment, we are all ruined! Your grandfather’s entire fortune goes to the charity trust, and you will be left with nothing—just your debts and your ruined reputation!"

Clara finally found her voice, though it emerged as a thin, cracked whistle.

"I didn't want to do this," Clara wept softly, her hands trembling as she tried to pull the torn fabric of her dress back over her waist. "Victoria said it was just a temporary measure... just to secure the signature until a real adoption could be arranged. She promised no one would get hurt."

Victoria backhanded Clara across the cheek with a sharp slap that silenced the entire room.

"Shut your lying trap, you ungrateful parasite!" Victoria shrieked, losing every ounce of the aristocratic poise she had cultivated for decades.

Martha, holding her daughter Victoria safely behind her, stepped forward and held up her tablet screen, broadcasting the high-definition security footage directly to the large overhead projector meant for the evening's slide show. The video clearly showed Clara stuffing the floral cushion beneath her dress in the downstairs ladies' lounge, with Victoria standing guard at the door.
