Chapter 4

The close-up zoom captured every minute detail of the small brass padlock, its shackle looped securely through a reinforced hole punched directly into the metal zipper pull of Toby’s jacket. Dust motes danced in the searing sunlight around the heavy brass body, which bore superficial scratches from years of rough handling. Below it, the German Shepherd’s heavy paw rested immovably on Toby’s scuffed sneaker, grounding the boy with a comforting, steady weight. Deep, palpable tension filled the scene, thick enough to choke on as Jax prepared to make his next move. The onlookers inside the diner pressed their faces closer to the tinted glass, sensing that the mundane highway stop had just devolved into something far darker and infinitely more complicated.

"Right now," Jax repeated strictly, his eyes darting from the padlock up to Toby’s face, searching for any sign of pain, compliance, or hidden danger. Toby blinked slowly, his long eyelashes brushing against pale skin as he offered a microscopic nod of permission. With infinite care, Jax reached out and pinched the base of the padlock, testing its resistance. It wasn't just a prop; it was locked tight, anchoring the jacket’s halves together in a manner that rendered the zipper completely useless. Clara let out a sharp, choked sob, the restraint finally snapping as she realized her desperate attempt to flee was officially over. She covered her mouth with both hands, her shoulders shaking with dry, silent weeping that lacked any genuine maternal grief and smelled entirely of panic and self-preservation.

"It’s not what you think," Clara choked out, her voice cracking into a high-pitched whine as she took another involuntary step forward. Jax didn't look at her; his entire focus remained fixed on the boy and the strange, bulky wrapping that lined his chest. With his free hand, Jax gently brushed aside the collar of the dark jacket, revealing layers upon layers of industrial clear packing tape winding tightly around the boy's torso. Beneath the tape, rectangular shapes were faintly visible, pressed flat against a white undershirt. Toby swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his thin throat. He slowly raised his trembling hand and extended the folded piece of paper toward the officer, his hazel eyes wide with a desperate, silent plea that begged for rescue before whoever was waiting down the highway caught up to them.
