Chapter 14

The morning sun broke over the horizon in a brilliant wash of gold and pink, casting long, crisp shadows across the tarmac of the local municipal airport’s private aviation terminal. Jax and Eleanor stood near the arrival gate alongside a small, silver-haired man wearing a heavy woolen fisherman’s sweater despite the mild spring morning. Arthur Miller paced back and forth across the polished concrete floor, his weathered hands clasped tightly behind his back, his eyes fixed intently on the sliding glass doors of the jet bridge. Every muscle in his old body was coiled with nervous anticipation, the wait of the past three weeks culminating in this single, monumental moment of reunion.
A soft chime echoed through the terminal, signaling the arrival of the early morning flight from the Northeast. Moments later, the sliding doors parted, and a flight attendant emerged wheeling a small carry-on bag, gently guiding a small eight-year-old boy with messy light brown hair, a dark jacket, and big, hopeful hazel eyes. Toby scanned the waiting area, his gaze instantly locking onto the weathered, familiar face of his grandfather standing just a few yards away. A radiant smile broke across the boy's pale face, banishing every trace of the fear and exhaustion that had defined his ordeal. "Grandpa!" Toby cried out, breaking away from the flight attendant and sprinting across the terminal floor as fast as his scuffed sneakers could carry him.
Arthur dropped to his knees with a choked sob, opening his arms wide just in time to catch his grandson as the boy threw himself forward into a fierce, unbreakable embrace. The old man buried his face in Toby’s shoulder, weeping openly as he squeezed the child tightly, as if afraid he might vanish if he let go even for a single second. Eleanor wiped a stray tear from her own cheek, while Jax stood a few paces back, watching the scene with a quiet, profound sense of closure. In Toby’s small hand, safely clutched against his grandfather’s woolen sweater, was the cedar lockbox—its brass latch gleaming in the morning light, holding the past securely while they stepped forward together into a bright, unfettered future.
