Chapter 3

Kneeling on the sun-baked asphalt, Officer Jax brought himself down to Toby’s eye level, deliberately softening the harsh lines of his face while maintaining absolute tactical readiness. The German Shepherd remained steady, its broad chest pressed gently against the boy's legs, keeping him securely grounded. Clara hovered at the edge of their personal space, her floral dress swaying as she shifted her weight restlessly from foot to foot, her hands clenching and unclenching into tight fists at her sides. She opened her mouth to interrupt again, her breathing shallow and rapid, desperate to fabricate another excuse that would pry her son away from the penetrating gaze of the law. Jax raised his left hand calmly, cutting off her impending protest before a single syllable could escape her dry lips.

"Please, just stop," Jax said, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of stern, unyielding command that brooked no argument. "Take your hands away from that bag right now." He gestured slightly toward the thick layers of wrapping material visible beneath Toby’s unzipped collar. Clara hesitated, her fingers twitching as her internal calculus raced to find a way out of the trap she had built for herself. The folded piece of paper remained clutched in Toby’s pale fist, damp with nervous sweat, the handwritten words blurring slightly against the cheap lined stock. Jax kept his eyes locked on Clara, ensuring she made no sudden moves toward the child or her own pockets, where a weapon or a key might be hidden.

Toby let out a tiny, shuddering breath, his ribs expanding against the restrictive layers binding his torso. The padlock swung with a dull metallic clink against the heavy zipper teeth, drawing Jax’s focused attention back to the bizarre security measure. "Ma'am, I am not going to ask you a second time," Jax repeated, his voice dangerously quiet now, carrying the full weight of a police officer ready to escalate the situation if compliance wasn't immediate. Slowly, agonizingly, Clara dropped her hands, letting them fall limp against the patterned fabric of her dress. She took a half-step backward, her jaw clenching so hard muscles ticked along her jawline. The illusion of the normal, struggling working mother was cracking down the middle, revealing the jagged, desperate reality underneath. Jax reached out slowly, his calloused fingertips hovering just inches from the mysterious package taped to the boy's chest, preparing to uncover what secret had driven a mother to lock her own child away in public view.
