Chapter 6 - The Sound Beneath the Concrete

The heavy thud reverberated through the kitchen floorboards, rattling the ceramic coffee mugs sitting on the counter. Every movement in the room stopped instantly. The forensics technicians froze, their gloved hands hovering over their evidence kits, while Officer Miller aimed his service weapon down toward the base of the walk-in vault door.

"Did you hear that?" Officer Miller demanded, his voice dropping into a sharp, authoritative whisper as he looked at Davis.

Officer Davis didn't answer immediately. He crouched down, placing his ear against the wooden planks near the kitchen table. Another sound followed—a faint, rhythmic scraping noise, like fingernails dragging across rough stone from deep underground.

Eleanor stood up from her chair, her face suddenly draining of its defiant color. The triumphant smirk she had worn just moments before vanished, replaced by a look of genuine, unadulterated horror. She stumbled backward, her hand gripping the edge of the counter for support as she stared at the floor.

"No," Eleanor whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "That’s impossible. We sealed the hatch. We poured three tons of quick-dry cement over the top."

Clara looked at her mother, a bitter, grim realization dawning in her chest. For years, she had believed her mother was the architect of every horror in this house. But the genuine terror in Eleanor’s eyes suggested something else—something neither of them had controlled.

"You didn't seal it well enough, Mother," Clara said quietly, her voice devoid of fear, replaced by a heavy, exhausted acceptance.

Officer Davis stood up quickly, his face grim. He looked at Officer Miller and nodded toward the heavy metal vault door. "Get the crowbars from the kit in the hallway. We’re going down."

"Wait!" Eleanor screamed, lunging forward before Officer Miller could react. She grabbed Davis by the sleeve of his dark uniform, her fingernails digging into the fabric. "You don't know what’s down there! It’s not human! It’s what took your father, Clara! It’s what took everyone!"

Officer Miller gently but firmly pulled Eleanor’s hand away, guiding her back toward the chair. "Ma'am, sit down. If there’s someone trapped beneath this house, it’s our duty to get them out."

"They aren't trapped," Clara said softly, her eyes fixed on the spot where the scraping sound continued to grow louder, rhythmic and deliberate. "They're trying to get back in."

The forensics technicians rushed to the hallway, returning a moment later with heavy steel pry bars and industrial flashlights. Officer Davis knelt by the baseboard of the walk-in vault, searching for a hidden seam or a latch that might correspond to the subterranean chamber shown on the hidden blueprints.

As Davis slid the flat end of the pry bar into a narrow gap in the corner of the floor, a sudden blast of freezing air rushed up from the cracks, extinguishing the overhead fluorescent light with a sharp electrical pop.

The kitchen plunged into sudden, heavy darkness, illuminated only by the harsh white beams of the police flashlights cutting through the dust-filled air.

And then, from the pitch-black void beneath the floorboards, a raspy, human voice whispered a single word into the silence.
