Chapter 11 - The Federal Badge

The front door pushed open wider without waiting for an invitation. Two men in dark suits, wearing sunglasses despite the overcast afternoon sky and displaying gold federal badges clipped to their breast pockets, stepped directly into the hallway. Their demeanor was absolute, cold, and entirely devoid of the local police officers' hesitation.
"Agent Vance, Bureau of Special Asset Recovery," the taller man announced, his voice deep and commanding as he flashed his credentials toward Officer Miller. "We’re taking control of this property under federal directive eighty-four-B."
Clara stared at the man in the dark suit, the last name echoing strangely in her ears. Vance. It was her family name, but not a single living relative she knew of had ever worked for any federal agency—let alone one with such an ominous, bureaucratic title.
Officer Miller instinctively stepped in front of Clara, his hand resting near his holster. "Hold on a second, Agent. We have an active local investigation here. Subterranean human confinement, historical missing persons reports, and a domestic assault in progress."
Agent Vance didn't even blink. He looked past Miller, his cold eyes locking onto Sarah, who still stood by the open walk-in vault door with the brass key in her hand.
"Ah, Miss Sarah Vance," Agent Vance said, pulling a folded document from his leather portfolio. "We’ve been looking for the primary estate custodian for twenty-two years. Your father’s filing system was notoriously difficult to decode without the master key."
Sarah tossed the brass key through the air. It landed with a soft clink on the hardwood floor right at the agent’s polished leather shoe. "You’re late, Agent. The inventory has already been compromised by the local branch."
Clara felt the room spinning around her. She looked from Agent Vance to Sarah, then back to Officer Davis. Nothing made sense. The local police, the missing relatives, the subterranean chamber, and now federal agents appearing out of thin air within minutes of a local disturbance call.
"What is going on here?" Clara demanded, her voice cracking with a mixture of fear and pure exhaustion. She stepped forward, ignoring the restraining hand Officer Davis tried to place on her arm. "Who are you people? What does my family have to do with federal asset recovery?"
Agent Vance slowly crouched down, picked up the brass key, and slipped it into his breast pocket. He looked up at Clara with a look that wasn't entirely unkind, but was profoundly chilling in its clinical detachment.
"Your grandfather, Mrs. Vance, wasn't a criminal in the traditional sense," Agent Vance explained smoothly, standing back up to his full height. "He was a recovery specialist for classified assets that the government couldn't officially acknowledge during the Cold War. When he retired, he brought his work home with him. Literally."
Officer Miller frowned, his hand finally dropping away from his holster. "Are you telling us this house is an off-books government cache?"
May you like
"I’m telling you," Agent Vance replied, turning his gaze toward the massive dark metal walk-in vault door behind Sarah, "that the door behind you isn't a panic room. It’s a secure transit lock. And the contents inside belong to the United States government."
