Chapter 14 - The Crimson Countdown

The crimson numbers glowed fiercely against the dark metal of the vault door, ticking downward with agonizing precision: 11:58.
The shrill electronic beep pulsed through the hallway like a steady heartbeat, driving the tension in the room to an unbearable breaking point. Officer Miller drew his weapon again, turning his sights on Agent Vance.
"What did you just trigger?" Miller demanded, his voice sharp and dangerous. "Turn off that countdown right now!"
Agent Vance didn't flinch, keeping his hands visible and steady at his sides. "I didn't trigger anything, Officer. The system is responding to the perimeter breach initiated when the local police forced the subfloor hatch open. It’s an automated security protocol designed to protect classified assets from hostile seizure."
Sarah let out a high-pitched, manic laugh, sliding down the wall until she sat cross-legged on the cold hardwood floor. "He set it to purge in twenty minutes the day he died! He knew someone would come sniffing around eventually!"
Clara stared at the glowing red numbers as they flipped to 11:42. Twelve minutes to live, twelve minutes to uncover the truth, or twelve minutes to let the house and everything inside it become an unmarked grave.
"Clara," Officer Davis urged, stepping up to her side and ignoring the federal agents for a moment. "If there’s a voice override, you have to use it. We need to stop that timer before the gas releases."
"I don't know the words!" Clara cried, tears streaming down her face as she looked at the heavy steel dial. "I don't know what my grandfather’s voice profile sounds like for the machine!"
"You share his vocal frequency," Agent Vance said calmly, stepping aside to give her access to the vault door. "Speak your full name, your mother’s full name, and the date the vault was installed into the decorative trim microphone. The acoustic sensor will adjust the pitch automatically."
11:25.
Clara took a slow, agonizing step forward. Her boots felt like lead. Every instinct in her body screamed at her to turn around, grab the keys, run out the front door, and flee into the cold afternoon air with Lily. But the memory of the patrol car waiting outside, and the federal quarantine locking down the entire perimeter, made escape an impossible dream.
She knelt down in front of the massive dark metal door, pressing her face close to the tiny, brass-trimmed ventilation grille where the microphone was hidden.
11:10.
"Clara Vance," she whispered into the metal mesh, her voice shaking violently. "Eleanor Vance. Nineteen-ninety-four."
The crimson numbers on the digital panel flickered. The ticking sound paused for a single, breathless second.

Then, a loud, pneumatic hiss echoed from deep within the internal mechanism of the vault door, followed by a heavy mechanical thunk as the primary deadbolt began to slide backward on its own.
