Chapter 15

Months after the doors of the Westridge basement were forced open, the heavy weight of the past had finally begun to settle into a manageable, enduring peace. The legal probation requirements were being met with steady diligence, the house sale was a distant memory, and Claire and David had relocated to a modest apartment closer to the city center, working hard to rebuild their lives from the ground up.

Inside the sunny rehabilitation wing of County General Hospital, Arthur Vance sat upright in his favorite armchair near the large windows, listening to the soft hum of classical music playing from a small bedside radio. His skin had regained a healthy glow, and his posture was upright and alert as he looked through a photo album resting on his lap.

Sarah walked into the room carrying two cups of fresh herbal tea, setting one down on the small side table before pulling up a chair beside him. A moment later, the door clicked open, and Claire and David stepped inside, carrying a small bouquet of fresh yellow flowers arranged in a simple glass vase. They stopped a respectful distance from the chair, waiting for an invitation that didn't take long to arrive.

Arthur looked up from the photo album, his cloudy eyes clearing for a fraction of a second as he recognized his daughters standing together in the doorway. A slow, warm smile spread across his weathered face. "Well, look who finally decided to drop by. Come on in, don't just stand out in the hall."

Claire let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding, a single tear of pure relief slipping down her cheek as she walked forward and knelt beside her father's chair. David followed close behind, setting the flowers gently on the table before placing a reassuring hand on Claire’s shoulder. There were no locked doors, no hidden servers, and no frantic keypads to punch under the harsh glare of an autumn sun. There was only the open, honest light of a family finally reunited, learning how to live without fear on the other side of the screen.
