Chapter 14
The afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the hospital’s courtyard garden where Sarah, Claire, and David sat on a wooden bench surrounded by late-blooming chrysanthemums. Arthur was resting inside the common room watching a baseball game on television, leaving the three family members alone in the quiet fresh air to bridge the vast chasm that had opened between them during the crisis.
Claire turned her head to look directly at her sister, her eyes carrying a quiet, genuine vulnerability that had been missing for months. "Sarah... thank you. For not giving up on him, even when we tried to shut everyone out. I know we deserve every bit of the criticism and the legal penalties we're facing."
Sarah took a slow breath, letting out a small, tired sigh before offering a measured nod. "You made terrible choices, Claire. Choices that could have cost Dad his life. I won't pretend I'm ready to completely forget how this all unfolded. But I also know that panic and financial desperation can push people to do things they never thought themselves capable of doing."
David looked down at his hands, speaking with quiet sincerity. "We thought we were protecting him from an uncaring system. Instead, we built our own prison right underneath our feet. We lost our home, our savings, and our peace of mind because we were too proud to ask for help when things started falling apart."
"Pride is a heavy thing to carry," Sarah agreed softly. "Dad taught us to be strong, to take care of our own. But he also taught us that family only works when we lean on each other instead of locking each other out."

"How is he doing with the new therapy schedule?" Claire asked, her voice trembling slightly with hope.
"He’s fighting," Sarah smiled faintly, the tension finally leaving her shoulders. "He remembers your names sometimes, and other times he thinks we're all back at the old family farm. But he’s safe, he’s comfortable, and he’s surrounded by people who care. That’s more than enough for right now."
