Chapter 8 - The Detonator in the Weeds

The high-pressure stream of water pinned Arthur to the grass for a few agonizing seconds, soaking his expensive charcoal suit and filling his nose and mouth with muddy runoff. He sputtered and flailed blindly, his hands clawing at the wet sod as he tried to regain his footing.
"Clara! Turn it off!" Elena screamed, rushing over to grab the heavy rubber hose and wrestling it away from Clara to cut the spigot.
The backyard instantly fell back into a tense, wet silence, broken only by the rhythmic hissing of the basement fire below and the ragged breathing of the injured kid lying on the grass. Clara didn't waste a second. She dropped to her knees and began frantically tearing through the overgrown weeds and thistle bushes where the steel detonator box had landed.
"Looking for this?" a cold voice mocked from behind her.
Clara whipped around. Arthur was already back on his feet, dripping wet and shivering, but his hand was firmly wrapped around the steel detonator box. He held it up triumphantly, his thumb resting directly over the red toggle switch. A victorious, unhinged smile spread across his soot-stained face.
"You're insane, Arthur," Clara whispered, slowly standing up while keeping her hands visible. "If you flip that switch, you die too."
"Do I?" Arthur laughed, a harsh, jagged sound. "I’ve had my exit planned for a decade, niece. This house is insured for ten million dollars under a shell corporation you don't even know the name of. Once the dust settles, I walk away a very rich man, and your little family secret turns to ash."
"Don't do it, man," the kid groaned from the ground, pressing his hand against his bleeding arm. "There are families living in the houses on either side of this one. You'll kill dozens of innocent people."
Arthur’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but his resolve remained ironclad. "Collateral damage. The price of doing business in the Vance family."
Before Arthur could apply pressure to the switch, Elena moved with absolute silence and deadly precision. She had circled around behind the air conditioning unit, using the heavy metal housing as cover. With a swift, powerful kick, she propelled a heavy piece of fallen brick directly at Arthur’s knee.

The brick struck home with a sickening thud. Arthur let out a sharp cry of pain, his leg buckling beneath him as he pitched sideways into the dirt. The detonator slipped from his numbed fingers, tumbling into the open, burning basement window below.
