Chapter 13 - The Collapse of Oak Street

The shockwave hit with terrifying force, blowing out the remaining windows of the hallway and sending a shower of splintered glass and drywall raining down upon them. Clara instinctively threw her arms over her head, shielding Elena as the floorboards beneath their feet buckled upward.
"What was that?" Elena screamed over the roar of collapsing timber, coughing violently as a fresh wave of thick gray dust filled the air.
"The secondary gas line!" Agent Vance yelled, his professional composure entirely shattered as he scrambled toward the front door, his flashlight beam cutting frantically through the blinding dust. "The explosion compromised the main structural supports! Everyone out, now!"
Clara grabbed Elena’s hand, refusing to let go this time, and sprinted blindly down the buckling hallway toward the front entrance. The walls of the old house groaned and twisted around them like living things, nails popping out of the studs with loud, metallic snaps.
They burst through the front door just as the entire porch roof collapsed inward with a thunderous crash, sending a massive plume of fire and debris shooting forty feet into the afternoon sky.
Sirens wailed in a deafening crescendo as three fire engines and multiple police cruisers tore down Oak Street, their flashing red and blue lights painting the neighborhood in chaotic streaks of color. Neighbors stood in their yards in bathrobes and work clothes, staring in absolute horror as the historic house slowly caved in on itself, swallowing decades of dark family secrets into a burning pit of rubble.
Clara and Elena collapsed onto the damp grass of the front lawn, gasping for fresh air. Agent Vance was already on his radio a few yards away, coordinating emergency containment teams.
Elena pulled her hand away from Clara’s grip, her breathing ragged as she stared at the burning wreckage of the home they had built together. She wiped a smudge of soot from her cheek, her face utterly devoid of emotion.
"You lied to me from the very beginning," Elena whispered, her voice dangerously quiet. "Every memory we made in that house... it was all built on a foundation of lies and blood."
"Elena, please," Clara begged, reaching out a trembling hand, but Elena flinched away as if she had been burned.
"Don't touch me," Elena said softly, standing up on shaky legs. She looked down at Clara one last time, a look of profound, irreparable sorrow in her eyes. "When the feds are done with you... don't look for me."

Before Clara could answer, a pair of local police officers jogged across the lawn, moving directly toward her with plastic zip-ties ready.
