Chapter 5 - A Dangerous Alliance

Clara’s fingers tightened around the cold steel of the revolver inside her pocket. Her thumb rested against the hammer, feeling the familiar, deadly resistance. She looked at Arthur, whose face remained a mask of arrogant certainty, and then glanced sideways at Elena, who was staring at her with wide, uncomprehending eyes.
"You brought a gun?" Elena whispered, taking a half-step backward as if seeing Clara for the very first time. "Clara, what is happening? Are you insane?"
"I'm keeping us alive," Clara muttered out of the corner of her mouth, never breaking eye contact with her uncle. "Arthur doesn't leave loose ends. If he takes that kid, none of us walk away from this house."
The stranger sensed the shifting tides. Without warning, he shoved past Clara, dropping low and sprinting blindly toward the open basement window.
"Stop him!" Arthur barked, his calm facade shattering instantly. Two heavy-set men in identical dark suits stepped out from behind Arthur, rounding the corner of the house with frightening speed.
Before the two enforcers could intercept the fleeing kid, Elena—driven by sheer adrenaline and absolute fury at being kept in the dark—lunged forward. She threw her leg out in a clean, decisive sweep, tripping the leading suit-wearer directly into the overgrown flowerbed. The man crashed hard into the dirt with a loud grunt, taking his partner down in a tangle of limbs and expensive fabric.
"Run, kid!" Elena screamed at the top of her lungs, grabbing a heavy plastic lawn chair and hurling it straight into Arthur's path.
Arthur sidestepped the chair with practiced ease, but the brief distraction was all the opening Clara needed. She drew the revolver from her pocket, leveling it squarely at her uncle’s chest. Her hand trembled slightly, but her eyes were ice-cold.
"Don't move another inch, Arthur," Clara ordered, her voice dead steady.
The kid scrambled through the open basement window, disappearing back into the dark interior with the journal clutched desperately in his arms. Arthur looked down at the barrel of the gun pointed directly at his heart, then slowly raised his hands in mock surrender, a dangerous glint appearing in his eyes.

"Brave words, niece," Arthur chuckled darkly, refusing to show fear. "You think shooting me solves anything? The moment I stop breathing, an automated timer sends every file on that hard drive straight to the federal prosecutor's office. You didn't just dig up the past today, Clara. You just signed your own death warrant."
