Chapter 6: Shadows at the Edge of the Dining Room

As Leo finished his meal, the heavy atmosphere in L’Orangerie began to settle into an uneasy calm. The other diners had gone back to their hushed conversations, though furtive glances were still cast toward table fourteen. Victoria sat back in her velvet chair, her mind racing through the logistics of what came next. She could not simply hand the boy a twenty-dollar bill and send him back out into the freezing autumn night. He had saved Julian. That sacred bond superseded all social convention, all class boundaries, and all corporate risk assessments.
Across the room, near the arched mahogany entrance, a tall man in a dark, tailored overcoat stood half-concealed by the heavy velvet drapery. His face was partially obscured by the dim lighting, but his eyes were fixed entirely on table fourteen. He watched Victoria tend to Leo with an intensity that bordered on predatory. The man raised a gloved hand to his ear, tapping a small Bluetooth earpiece, murmuring something low and unintelligible to someone on the other end of the line. He lingered for a moment longer before turning sharply on his heel and disappearing out into the foyer, swallowed by the bustling lobby crowd.
Victoria, caught up in observing Julian and Leo quietly talking about comic books, missed the figure entirely. Julian was leaning in close, pointing enthusiastically at a design on his napkin, while Leo offered a rare, hesitant smile that transformed his bruised face. It was the first time Victoria had seen the boy look anything like an ordinary child, stripped of the hunted, feral wariness that defined his street existence. It was a heartbreaking transformation, reminding her that Leo was just a little boy who should be worrying about homework and video games, not dodging traffic and sleeping on concrete grates.
"Hey, Leo," Victoria interrupted gently, leaning forward. "We need to figure out where you're going to sleep tonight. And I don't mean a bench or a park. My home has plenty of space, and a guest room is being prepared for you right now, metaphorically speaking."
Leo’s smile vanished instantly. He froze, his fork clattering against the pristine porcelain plate. The fear returned to his dark eyes in a rush, sharper and deeper than before. "No," he whispered, shaking his head frantically. "I can't go to your house. You don't understand. If I go inside a real house, with an address, they will find me."

Victoria frowned, her legal mind instantly locking onto the cryptic warning. "Who is 'they', Leo? Who are you hiding from?"
Before Leo could answer, the restaurant’s heavy glass front doors swung open with a sharp click, and a pair of uniformed city police officers strode purposefully into the dining room, guided by the sweating, anxious manager. Victoria’s heart skipped a beat. She stood up immediately, stepping in front of Leo and Julian to block the officers’ path, her professional armor snapping back into place with terrifying speed.
