Chapter 9: The Empty Driveway

Julian burst back through the French doors into the dining room, his chest burning with cold air and exhaustion. The crystal chandelier still cast its brilliant light across the abandoned table, where the half-eaten bowl of truffle soup sat like a toxic monument to their former life.

"Clara! Lily!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceiling. There was no answer.

He bolted through the dining room, crossed the grand foyer with its polished marble floors, and pushed open the front heavy oak door. The front driveway was empty. Clara’s silver SUV was gone, leaving only the damp asphalt glistening under the porch light. Julian checked his phone with trembling fingers. A single text message glowed on the screen from the burner device: We are clear. Heading downtown now. Drive safe, Julian.

A wave of profound relief washed over him, followed immediately by a sharp spike of renewed panic. He had twenty minutes before Vance’s men realized the courier sample Arthur took back was nothing more than kitchen baking soda mixed with salt, and less than twelve hours before they discovered the home office safe had been emptied and turned over to federal authorities. He couldn't go back into the house; it was no longer a home—it was a crime scene waiting to be unsealed.

Julian jogged down the front steps, leaving the front door unlocked behind him, and climbed into his own sedan parked along the circular drive. The engine roared to life with a press of the starter button. He shifted into drive and pulled out onto the quiet suburban street, his headlights cutting sharp swathes through the dense autumn fog rolling in from the nearby river.

The drive downtown took twenty-five agonizing minutes. Every tail-light ahead of him looked like an unmarked surveillance vehicle; every shadow on the overpass felt like an ambush waiting to happen. Julian kept his eyes fixed on the asphalt, his mind racing through contingencies. If he met Vance at the marina at noon tomorrow, he would be walking into the lion's den without a net. But it was the only way to draw the syndicate into the open while federal agents moved in to secure the perimeter based on the evidence Clara was delivering tonight.

As he crossed the old iron bridge spanning the river, the city skyline rose before him like a jagged mountain range of glass and steel, its towers piercing the low-hanging cloud cover. The federal courthouse sat at the center of the financial district, a fortress of granite and reinforced concrete that represented the only remaining sanctuary in a world that had suddenly turned upside down.

Julian turned his car toward the government center, his knuckles white on the leather steering wheel, knowing that the fragile glass house they had built was gone forever, leaving only the hard, unvarnished truth standing in its place.
