Chapter 10: Sanctuary of Stone

The federal courthouse loomed against the ink-black sky like a monolithic cliff, its imposing neoclassical columns floodlit from below in stark white light. Julian parked his sedan in a restricted visitor slot near the side entrance, ignoring the warning signs. He killed the engine and sat for a moment in the sudden, heavy silence, listening to the ticking of the cooling metal under the hood. His dark suit felt rumpled, the bow tie now a frayed, uncomfortable knot around his neck that he finally reached up and tore completely off, tossing it onto the passenger seat.
He stepped out onto the wide granite steps, his dress shoes echoing sharply in the empty plaza. Two armed federal protective service officers stood near the reinforced glass doors, their dark tactical vests and sidearms communicating a level of finality that Julian found oddly reassuring. This was real authority—not the shadow jurisdiction of Marcus Vance and his corporate front companies.
"State your business, sir," the older officer asked, stepping forward as Julian approached the security checkpoint.
"My name is Julian Vance—no relation to the syndicate," he corrected himself bitterly, pulling out his driver's license. "I need to speak immediately to Special Agent Miller in White-Collar Crime. My wife delivered digital and physical evidence regarding an ongoing international laundering ring less than twenty minutes ago. I need to corroborate her statement."
The officer studied Julian’s pale, strained face, taking in the expensive but disheveled suit and the wild look in his dark eyes. He tapped a code into his wrist-mounted communicator. "Hold position, Mr. Vance. Let me verify inside."
Two minutes later, heavy magnetic locks buzzed, and a second interior glass door slid open. A woman in a sharp charcoal pantsuit with short, iron-gray hair and piercing blue eyes stepped out into the lobby. It was Special Agent Miller herself, holding a manila folder marked with red classification stamps.
"Mr. Vance," Miller said, her voice sharp and devoid of warmth. "Your wife is currently debriefing with my team on the third floor. She handed over the encrypted drive and the physical ledgers from your office safe. You realize what this means for you, don't you?"

"I know it means I'm facing federal conspiracy charges alongside the men I was laundering money for," Julian said without hesitation, his shoulders slumping slightly as the adrenaline finally began to ebb, leaving a deep, bone-weary exhaustion in its wake. "I accept that. But my daughter and my wife need full federal protection starting tonight. Marcus Vance and his enforcers know we've broken ranks."
Agent Miller stared at him for a long, calculating beat, weighing his words against the mountains of digital evidence Clara had just placed on her desk. Then she nodded curtly. "Your wife already negotiated protection terms for the child, Mr. Vance. You’re welcome to join them upstairs—once you've surrendered your phone, your car keys, and every detail of tomorrow's noon meeting at the marina."
