Chapter 11: Dawn Over the Marina

The grey light of dawn broke sluggishly over the city harbor, painting the choppy waters of the river in dull shades of pewter and slate. Julian sat in a secure federal holding room on the third floor of the courthouse, staring out the high-arched bulletproof window at the distant cranes of the downtown docks. A paper cup of cold black coffee sat untouched on the metal table in front of him. Through the connecting door, he could hear the faint murmur of voices where Clara and Lily were resting in a secure family suite down the hall.

Agent Miller entered the room quietly, holding a fresh dossier and a secure tablet displaying live satellite feeds of the marina. She pulled out a steel chair and sat opposite Julian, sliding the tablet across the table.

"We have tactical teams positioned around slip fourteen and the adjacent warehouses," Miller said, leaning forward. "Sniper overwatch is locked in on the third-story gantry crane. Coast Guard cutters are patrolling the channel disguised as commercial tugs. If Marcus Vance shows up today at noon, he walks into a federal trap he won't be able to buy his way out of."

Julian looked down at the tablet screen, watching the grainy thermal imaging of the docks. "He won't come alone," Julian said quietly. "Arthur will be with him, plus at least four armed spotters stationed along the perimeter fence. They don't take chances when multi-million-dollar transfers are on the line."

"Neither do we," Miller replied, her tone resolute. "Your cooperation tonight changed the legal landscape, Julian. By bringing us the exact meeting time and location before they realized the sample was baking soda, you gave us the element of surprise. But you still have to play your part. You have to walk down onto that dock at noon and hand over the decoy drive."

"I understand," Julian said, rubbing his tired eyes with the heels of his hands. "Can I see my family before I go?"

Miller hesitated, then nodded. "Ten minutes. Then we brief the tactical unit."

Julian stood up and walked down the sterile, fluorescent-lit corridor to the family suite. He pushed the heavy door open softly. Clara was sitting on the edge of a narrow cot, her silver sequined dress now replaced by a simple gray pullover and dark jeans she had grabbed from their emergency bag. Lily was curled up asleep beneath a heavy wool blanket on the adjacent cot, her brown teddy bear clutched tightly in her arms, the blonde bow still tied neatly in her hair.

Clara looked up as Julian entered, her eyes red-rimmed from crying but steady. She stood and walked over to him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. Neither of them spoke for a long time. There were no words left that hadn't been said in the terrifying hours of the previous night.

"Be careful, Julian," Clara whispered against his ear. "We finally have a chance at a real life. Don't throw it away now."
