Chapter 7: The Confrontation in the Wings

Clara abandoned the podium, her silver heels clicking frantically against the hardwood stage as she bolted toward the wings. Her face was flushed with blind fury, the veneer of aristocratic elegance completely shattered. She stormed past the bewildered stagehands and lunged straight toward Maya, her diamond earrings swinging violently with every jerky movement. "You little rat!" Clara hissed, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper as she grabbed a handful of Maya’s grey button-down shirt. "You think you’ve won something? I will bury you so deep in litigation you’ll never see daylight again!"

Maya did not flinch, nor did she attempt to break Clara’s grip. She simply looked down at Clara’s trembling hand, then raised her eyes to meet the older woman’s frantic gaze. "You can't bury the truth when it's already breathing, Clara," Maya said softly, her voice steady and devoid of fear. "My father spent his entire life building medicine to save people, while you built a fortress to hoard wealth. The walls are coming down."

"You're a nobody!" Clara spat, her voice rising in hysteria as several reporters with cameras began rushing down the side aisle toward the backstage entrance. "A common waitress stealing a moment of attention! Nobody will ever believe a peasant over a Vance!"

"Look at the screen, Clara," Maya replied calmly, nodding toward the giant monitor still broadcasting the endless stream of incriminating evidence. "The whole world is watching."

Clara whipped her head around, watching in absolute horror as a new document loaded onto the screen—a bank transfer receipt showing millions of dollars funneled from the Vance Foundation accounts into an offshore account registered under Clara’s personal name, dated the exact week Arthur Vance died. The color drained completely from Clara’s face, leaving her looking hollowed out and ancient beneath her heavy makeup. Her grip on Maya’s shirt loosened, her fingers trembling uncontrollably before dropping to her sides.

The sound of rushing footsteps and shouting voices echoed from the main hallway as the press corps breached the backstage door, flashing cameras blinding the narrow corridor with strobing white light. "Miss Vance! Is it true? Did your family frame Arthur Vance?" shouted a reporter, shoving a microphone forward. Other journalists swarmed the area, shouting questions and blocking every possible exit route.

Clara stumbled backward, her silver sequins catching the harsh glare of camera flashes. She looked like a ghost trapped in a house of mirrors, surrounded by the very ghosts of her past deeds. She turned her desperate eyes back to Maya, opening her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The empire built on lies had finally collapsed under its own crushing weight.
