Chapter 5: The Digital Trojan Horse

The USB drive slid into the media server’s port with a soft click that felt entirely too loud in the tense quiet of the backstage alcove. On the central control monitor, a dialogue box popped up instantly: External Media Detected. Initialize Auto-Play? Maya’s hand hovered over the trackpad. Her pulse roared in her ears, drowning out the sound of the polite applause rolling in from the auditorium. If she hit enter now, there was no turning back. The evidence would bypass the internal firewall, override the pre-scheduled gala video feed, and broadcast directly onto the forty-foot LED screens looming behind Clara Vance.

"Hey! Who authorized an external drive on the main deck?" a voice shouted from across the control station. A senior IT technician wearing a headset marched toward Maya, his face contorted in alarm. Maya didn't flinch. She slammed her palm down on the enter key, executing the script Marcus had coded specifically for this moment. A cascade of green code flooded the secondary monitor as the system locked out local administrative controls. "Security breach! Stop her!" the technician yelled, lunging forward.

Before the technician could grab her arm, the auditorium speakers let out a sharp, electronic screech. The polite applause abruptly cut off as the massive LED screen behind Clara flickered from a shimmering golden Vance Foundation logo to a stark, blindingly white background. Bold, black courier font materialized across the screen, spelling out a file title that made the blood drain from Clara’s face: VANCE_FOUNDATION_FRAUD_ARCHIVES_2019.PDF.

Out on the stage, Clara froze mid-sentence, her mouth slightly parted in mid-word, her crimson lips contrasting sharply with the sudden, ghostly pallor of her skin. She spun around, her expensive silver sequins catching the harsh white light as she stared up at the giant screen in absolute horror. The audience muttered in sudden, confused shock, shifting uncomfortably in their expensive velvet seats.

Maya stepped out from behind the velvet drape, moving slowly into the dim wings of the stage. She crossed her arms over her grey button-down shirt, watching Clara’s panic unfold with a chilling, motionless calm. The IT technician stopped dead in his tracks, staring at the screen and then back at Maya, realizing too late that he was standing in the middle of an industrial warzone.

Clara grabbed the podium edges so hard her knuckles turned stark white. Her breath hitched, her polished facade cracking visibly as the audience began to murmur louder. On the screen, the first scanned document appeared—a signed memo bearing her father’s signature, outlining the deliberate theft of Arthur Vance’s medical patents. Clara looked toward the wings, her sharp eyes scanning the shadows until they locked directly onto Maya’s steady, tear-free gaze. In that fraction of a second, Clara realized the waitress she had humiliated ten minutes ago had just detonated her entire life.
