Chapter 4: Behind the Velvet Curtains

Backstage was a chaotic hive of production assistants, frantic lighting techs, and towering wooden flats painted to look like classical marble columns. Maya slipped behind a heavy velvet drape, blending into the shadows like a ghost. On the massive confidence monitor hanging near the prompt desk, Clara Vance stood at the podium in the center of the stage, her silver dress gleaming under the blinding spotlights. She was halfway through her rehearsed speech about philanthropy, ethics, and corporate integrity, delivering every sycophantic word with practiced, nauseating charm.
"Our family has always believed that true leadership is born from sacrifice," Clara projected into the microphone, her voice echoing richly across the auditorium. In the wings, the stage manager, a stressed man named Greg with a headset clamped over his ears, was frantically checking his clipboard. He didn’t notice the exhausted young woman in the grey shirt standing near the master control console. Maya’s eyes scanned the complex array of digital monitors, audio routing boards, and the master override switch for the primary presentation laptop connected to the massive LED screen behind Clara.
"Hey, you! What are you doing back here? Servers aren't allowed past the service corridor," a sharp voice hissed. Maya spun around to see a young production assistant glaring at her, clutching a stack of cue cards. Before the assistant could call security, Maya stepped forward, her gaze locking onto the woman with such intense, unblinking focus that the assistant actually took a step back. "I am here on direct orders from Marcus Vance," Maya lied smoothly, her voice dropping into a dangerous, authoritative register. "If you interrupt this broadcast, you will personally explain to the network executives why your production ruined the biggest live broadcast of the year."

The assistant swallowed hard, intimidated by the terrifying aura radiating from the bruised, dust-stained waitress. "Uh—okay. Just stay out of the way of the camera boom," the assistant muttered, scurrying off toward the soundboard. Maya let out a long, slow breath. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small USB flash drive—the digital copy of Arthur Vance’s unedited research papers and audio confessions, which Marcus had managed to smuggle into the building just minutes ago via the loading dock.
On the big screen, Clara smiled radiantly as the audience erupted into polite applause. The emcee stepped forward to introduce the final presentation segment—a retrospective video detailing the Vance Foundation's glorious history. Maya walked quietly toward the main media server rack. Her fingers hovered over the USB port. The red light on the server blinked rhythmically, a digital pulse counting down the final seconds before Clara’s carefully constructed empire would turn to ash. Maya closed her eyes, remembering the crash of the tray, the stinging pain of Clara’s cruelty, and the tears of her father. She inserted the drive.
