Chapter 7

Eleanor stood in the center of the foyer, looking remarkably composed for a woman who had spent the previous night in a county holding cell. Dressed in an emerald-green pantsuit that matched the color of her eyes, she wore her gold chain necklace like a badge of office. Her messy hair from the night before was now perfectly styled into a sleek chignon, and her expression was one of cold, unyielding superiority. She looked up the staircase as Connor and Clara descended, carrying their final bags, with baby Leo resting comfortably in his carrier seat.

“Leaving so soon?” Eleanor mocked, resting her hands on her hips. “You children really thought you could call the police on me in my own home and face no consequences? The world doesn’t work the way you want it to, Connor. You are nothing without my support, and your little family will starve within a week.”

Connor stopped on the third step from the bottom, standing tall and blocking Eleanor’s path to the upper level. His voice was steady, devoid of the hesitation that had defined his interactions with her for decades. “We’re leaving, Eleanor, but not because you evicted us. We’re leaving because we refuse to let you poison our son’s life for another single second. Your money, your house, and your control can keep you company in this empty tomb.”

Eleanor’s face contorted in fury, the familiar mask slipping to reveal the desperate control freak underneath. She lunged forward, pointing a manicured finger directly at Clara’s chest. “You! You dragged him down with your common background and your pathetic ambitions! He was supposed to take over the family legacy, not run away like a coward with a penniless—”

Before she could finish the sentence, a sharp knock at the open front door interrupted her tirade. Two uniformed police officers—the same ones who had escorted her out the night before—stood on the porch, flanked by a tall man in a plain grey jacket wearing a county badge.

“Eleanor Sterling?” the man in the grey jacket asked, stepping into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. “I’m Investigator Vance from the County Elder and Dependent Protection Division. We’ve received multiple independent reports regarding psychological intimidation, unlawful confinement, and financial coercion involving residents of this address.”

Eleanor’s color drained instantly from her cheeks, the fierce bravado vanishing as she stared at the county badge gleaming in the hallway light.
