Chapter 6

The upstairs bedrooms sounded like a war zone of fast-paced packing as drawers were emptied into suitcases and baby gear was dismantled with practiced desperation. Clara folded Leo’s remaining clothes with trembling hands, placing them inside a worn canvas duffel bag that belonged to Connor from his college days. Every surface of the room seemed to mock them with memories of a life they had tried so hard to build within toxic walls. Yet, as each item disappeared into luggage, a profound sense of lightness replaced the dread in Clara’s chest. They were finally escaping the machine.

Connor walked in carrying a cardboard box filled with academic books and personal journals. He set it down near the door and wiped his brow with the back of his arm, his light blue shirt stained with sweat from the physical exertion. “The car is packed as full as it will go,” he said, looking around the nearly empty room. “We’ll stay at a modest motel downtown tonight using my personal savings account—the one she didn’t know about. Tomorrow, we go straight to Legal Aid to contest the forfeiture clause.”

Clara stopped folding and looked up at him, her eyes searching his face. “Do you think we have a real chance, Connor? Vance looked entirely too confident. If she controls the trust, how do we survive without falling into absolute poverty?”

“My father left a separate safety deposit box at the downtown branch,” Connor confessed, a secret he had guarded for years out of fear that Eleanor might discover it. “He knew what she was capable of long before I did. He told me about it when I turned eighteen, but I never had a reason to open it until now. It contains independent assets that bypass the estate entirely.”

Clara let out a breath that sounded half like a laugh and half like a sob of pure relief. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

“Because I was ashamed, Clara. Ashamed that I married into this madness and couldn’t protect you from the start without relying on secrets of my own,” Connor admitted softly, kneeling beside her and wrapping his arms around her and Leo in a tight, protective embrace. “No more secrets. From now on, it’s just the three of us against the world.”

Downstairs, the heavy front door swung open with a loud thud, followed by the unmistakable click of heels on hardwood. Eleanor’s voice echoed up the stairwell, sharp and triumphant. “Connor! Clara! I hope you’re packing efficiently. You’re wearing out your welcome!”
