Chapter 14

The sudden chaos erupted with terrifying speed. In the hallway, Agent Hayes and the Apex Global operative traded heavy blows, crashing against the drywall and shattering a decorative vase on the entryway table.

Nyah didn't flinch. Her finger tightened slightly on the trigger of the silenced pistol, her eyes locked onto Evelyn with a chilling, predatory emptiness.

"Drop the keys, Mother," Nyah demanded, her voice shaking slightly with adrenaline and rage. "You think you're some kind of hero in a tragic story, but you're just a relic. You ruined my childhood with your suffocating expectations, and now you're trying to ruin my future. I built this empire from nothing, and I won't let you or that ungrateful brat take it away from me."

Evelyn didn't back down. Instead, she took a slow, deliberate step forward, her posture rigid, her eyes burning with a lifetime of fierce, protective maternal love that Nyah had long since abandoned.

"I didn't suffocate you, Nyah," Evelyn said, her voice steady, quiet, and profoundly heavy with sorrow. "I gave you everything I had so you wouldn't have to carry the weight I did. But somewhere along the way, you traded your soul for a corner office and a designer dress. You didn't just lock a boy out on that balcony last night—you locked the last piece of your own humanity outside in the cold."

Nyah’s face twisted in fury, her hand trembling as she raised the barrel higher. "Shut up! Just shut up!"

From the dark hallway behind Nyah, a small figure stepped out from the shadows.

Leo stood barefoot in the doorway, wearing his light blue pajamas, his eyes wide and dry, holding a small video recorder he had pulled from Marcus’s dropped tactical kit.

Nyah froze, her head snapping around. For a fraction of a second, the cold, corporate mask cracked, revealing the panicked, terrified little girl hiding beneath the armor of ambition.

"Leo..." Nyah breathed, her voice faltering.

"I didn't mean to break your dress, Mom," Leo said softly, his voice echoing in the dead silence of the penthouse. "And I didn't mean to spill the juice. But I love you anyway."

The pistol slipped in Nyah’s hand, her arm dropping to her side as the heavy metal weapon clattered loudly against the wooden floorboards.
