Chapter 10

The federal safehouse was a nondescript brick townhouse tucked away on a quiet, tree-lined street in Georgetown, completely indistinguishable from its affluent neighbors except for the faint hum of heavy-duty security generators hidden behind the air conditioning units. Inside, the air was warm and smelled faintly of old books and fresh coffee.

Leo sat wrapped in a heavy wool blanket on a plush leather sofa, staring fixedly at a small television screen playing muted morning cartoons. He hadn't spoken a single word since they left the brownstone.

Marcus stood near the window, peering through the heavy slatted blinds at the empty street outside, while a federal investigator in a sharp gray suit paced back and forth across the hardwood floor, holding the cracked smartphone Leo had handed over in the alley.

"The file is encrypted with military-grade software," the investigator, Agent Hayes, said, frowning deeply as he stared down at the screen. "We can't crack the main video container without the master decryption key, which Apex Global holds on their main servers downtown. If we try to brute-force it, the hardware will remotely wipe itself in thirty seconds."

Evelyn, sitting beside Leo on the sofa with a cup of untouched tea between her hands, looked up sharply. Her eyes were bloodshot from exhaustion, but her mind was razor-sharp.

"Nyah has that key," Evelyn said flatly, her voice devoid of emotion. "She keeps her corporate hard drives in her home office safe. She bragged about it once—said it was connected directly to the Apex mainframes so she could approve data transfers from anywhere in the apartment."

Marcus turned away from the window, his expression grim. "If we send a team back into that apartment now, it'll be a bloodbath. Apex security is already occupying the building under the guise of a 'gas leak evacuation.' They're sanitizing the entire floor."

"Then we don't send a team," Evelyn replied quietly, standing up from the sofa with a slow, deliberate motion that surprised both men. She walked over to the coffee table, picked up her worn leather handbag, and pulled out an old, brass-keyed ring.

"Mrs. Vance, what are you doing?" Marcus asked, stepping forward.

"I bought that apartment for her," Evelyn said, her voice steady and chillingly calm. "Long before she was a tech executive, long before she started dining with corporate criminals. I paid the down payment with my late husband’s life insurance policy, and I kept a master maintenance key that overrides the digital locks from the mechanical service shaft on the roof."

Agent Hayes stopped pacing, staring at the elderly woman with a mixture of shock and reluctant admiration. "You're talking about breaking back into a secure corporate fortress guarded by armed mercenaries."

"I'm talking about getting my daughter back from the monsters she invited into her bed, and making sure my grandson has a future that isn't lived in the shadows," Evelyn said, looking down at Leo, who finally turned his head to look at her, his big, terrified eyes locking onto hers.

Before either man could argue, the television screen across the room suddenly flickered, cutting off the cartoons mid-frame. A live local news broadcast broke into the feed, showing footage of Nyah Vance standing on the steps of Apex Global headquarters, microphone in hand, giving a tearful, highly orchestrated press conference about a tragic domestic kidnapping involving her mother and a deranged intruder.

On the screen, Nyah wiped a carefully placed fake tear from her cheek, looking directly into the camera lens with a cold, terrifying smile.

"My son has been taken by an unstable relative," Nyah lied smoothly to the gathered reporters, her voice trembling with manufactured grief. "I beg whoever has him to return my boy safely. Please... bring Leo home."
