Chapter 1

The damp night air of the high-rise balcony bit into Leo’s skin through his thin light blue pajamas, but the biting cold was nothing compared to the shock vibrating through his small frame. Inside the warm, brilliantly lit luxury living room, his mother, Nyah, stood rigidly over a dark pool of spilled orange juice. The sticky liquid ruined not only the polished wooden floors but also her glittering, strapless beige evening dress, a designer piece she had bragged about for weeks. Nyah’s short-haired bald head gleamed under the recessed ceiling lights, framing a face contorted by pure, unfiltered rage. Her chest heaved with every harsh breath she took.
Leo pressed his palms flat against the cold exterior of the floor-to-ceiling glass balcony door, shivering as he stared at her through the transparent barrier.
"Stay out there and think about what you did!" Nyah yelled, her voice muffled slightly by the thick double-paned glass as she aggressively pointed a trembling finger at the bright orange stain spreading across her high-end garment. "You ruined my dress!"
Leo’s lower lip quivered as he tried to speak, pressing his mouth against the glass.
"Please let me in!" Leo pleaded, his voice cracking with panic. "It was an accident!"
Nyah did not soften. Instead, she stepped forward with heavy, deliberate strides, grabbed the aluminum handle, and slammed the heavy sliding door shut with a deafening thud that rattled the glass in its frame. With a sharp, mechanical click, she turned the deadbolt, sealing him outside on the high-rise ledge. Before Leo could even register the finality of the lock turning, Nyah reached up and viciously dragged the heavy sheer white curtain across the track, completely blotting out her silhouette and cutting off his only visual connection to the safety of the apartment.
Panic surged through the seven-year-old boy. He clawed frantically at the fabric, whispering useless pleas into the folds of the curtain. Realizing she was entirely ignoring him, he fumbled into the pocket of his light blue pajama pants and pulled out his small, sturdy smartphone. With tear-blurred eyes, he unlocked the screen, dialed the only number he had memorized by heart, and pressed the device tightly against his ear.

"Grandma, she locked me out!" Leo cried out, his voice desperate as the first distant wail of a police siren echoed faintly from the street far below. "Please help me!"
On the other end of the line, there was no immediate answer, only the sound of a sharp, terrified intake of breath.
