Chapter 4

The federal agents moved through the luxury penthouse with quiet, relentless efficiency, boxing up expensive art pieces, seizing laptops, and sealing filing cabinets that contained decades of corporate corruption and personal secrets. Julian stood frozen near the marble fireplace, his black suit suddenly looking like a mourning suit for an empire that had died in a matter of seconds. Victoria was pacing the length of the room, her phone pressed frantically to her ear, but every call she attempted to make resulted in a flat, automated tone indicating that her numbers had been blocked or disconnected by order of the federal court.
"This is unconstitutional!" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking as she turned on Agent Vance. "We demand to speak to the Attorney General! We dine with senators! You cannot treat us like common criminals!" Agent Vance didn't even bother to look up from the manifest he was signing. "The Attorney General is the one who signed the warrant, Mrs. Vance. Your influence ended the moment your daughter-in-law walked into our field office three months ago with a flash drive and a bruised face."
Julian snapped his head toward Elena, who stood near the tall floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering skyline of the city. The lights below twinkled indifferently, completely unaware that the man who owned half of them was now financially nonexistent. "Three months?" Julian echoed, his voice barely a breath. "You were planning this while I... while I bought you that dress? While you held our son?"
Elena turned her head slightly, the purple bruise under her eye catching the harsh fluorescent lights of the agents' portable lamps. "You thought my silence was weakness, Julian. You thought because I had no money, no family in the city, and no voice that I would spend the rest of my life as your punching bag while you paraded mistresses through our home," Elena said, her voice steady and clear. "You forgot one fundamental truth: a mother backed into a corner with a child to protect will burn down the entire world to keep him safe."
Agent Vance signaled two officers standing near the entryway. "Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance senior, you need to accompany us downtown for questioning regarding the obstruction of justice and the financial concealment of embezzled funds." Julian took a desperate step forward, his hands raised in a pleading gesture that looked utterly alien on a man of his stature. "Elena, please. We have a child. Think of our family. We can fix this. We can leave the country, start over—"

"Our family ended the day you raised your hand against me in front of our son," Elena interrupted, her tone final and absolute. She shifted the baby in her arms, ensuring the white blanket remained wrapped tightly around the sleeping infant. "I am not your wife anymore, Julian. I am the witness for the prosecution." Two federal marshals stepped up on either side of Julian, their heavy hands resting firmly on his shoulders. Julian didn't resist; the fight had completely drained out of him, replaced by a hollow, sickening realization that his life of unearned luxury was gone forever.
Victoria tried to lash out, swinging her heavy leather handbag at an agent who attempted to escort her toward the door, but she was subdued with practiced ease, her pearl necklace snapping and scattering white beads across the expensive hardwood floor like frozen tears. As the agents led them out into the hallway, the heavy mahogany doors closed behind them, cutting off Victoria's frantic shrieks and leaving Elena alone in the vast, silent penthouse with her son.
